Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. First Edition in Icelandic. pp. 310. Octavo., measuring 8.75" x 6". Publisher's original blue cloth over boards, title stamped in gilt to the spine, with publisher's monogram of basalt columns blindstamped to the front board (a reference to the publisher's name Stuðlaberg - the Icelandic term for basalt formations); s…peckled edges. Light wear to spine ends, tips, very lightly shaken; otherwise, extremities remain in very good condition. Contents uniformly without blemish with bright, clean, and unmarked leaves and sound binding; very good. References: This edition unrecorded in OCLC (see OCLC #184746377 for the later 1983 printing). Not found in KVK. Notably, not found in Fenwick [George Orwell: A Bibliography]. We note various editions in Leitir amongst Icelandic institutions. Published a mere two years following its first appearance in English (Secker & Warburg, 1949), our offering is the exceedingly rare first printing in the Icelandic language of Orwell's famed dystopian novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four. This edition, published in 1951, was only the second title issued by the short-lived, explicitly anti-Communist Icelandic press Stuðlaberg (Studlaberg). The press was founded amid growing concern over the influence of the communist movement in Iceland by two young activists, Geir Hallgrímsson (later Prime Minister of Iceland, 1974-1978) and Eyjólfur Konráð Jónsson, with the overt political support of the Independence Party and its Minister of Culture, Bjarni Benediktsson. Stuðlaberg would ultimately only publish three works: Guðinn sem brást (The God That Failed, 1950), a collection of essays by former communists including Arthur Koestler and André Gide; Nítján hundruð áttatíu og fjögur (Nineteen Eighty-Four, 1951), introducing Orwell's chilling vision of bureaucratic totalitarianism to Icelandic readers; and Bóndinn (El Campesino, 1952), Valentín González's stark memoir of the Spanish Republican general's escape from Stalin's Gulags. Although short-lived, Stuðlaberg would lay the foundation for the establishment of Public Book Club (Almenna bókafélagið, or AB), one modeled in part upon the communist-aligned book club Mál og menning. AB would go on to feature many of Iceland's leading literary figures, including Gunnar Gunnarsson, Tómas Guðmundsson, Davíð Stefánsson, Guðmundur G. Hagalín, Kristmann Guðmundsson, and Kristján Albertsson, among others.
