These two volumes of Twain-Howells letters are illustrated with photographs and are fully annotated and indexed by the editors. The books are both in near fine condition--former owner's stamp on ffep and some age discoloration of the paper. Oddly, vol.I ends with page 453 at the end of a letter, as the pasted down back fixed end paper--Vol.II, after title page, contents, etc starts on page 455 with the next letter. They appear to have been published this way and I don't think anything is missing. Both dust jackets are in very good condition with some wear along edges--now in protective jackets. From dust jacket: William Dean Howells once commented on the suggestion that his letters from Mark Twain be published, "I think so too; they are wonderful; and if mine were printed with them, perhaps it would not hurt." This first comprehensive collection of a correspondence between two brilliant stylists reflects the development of this American literary friendship of nearly unparalleled duration and significance. The letters augment and in some ways revise existing biographical estimates of thse two colorful personalities. The majority have never been published; and of the remainder, many appear for the first time in full, unbowdlerized transcription. The publishing practices and critical attitudes of the period are variously documented here, in particular, the formation during the Gilded Age of a characteristic vernacular tradition in American writing.
