"In 1800 Sir William Herschel carried out a series of experiments to determine the distribution of heating power among the various colours in the solar spectrum. He explored a prismatic spectrum projected on a table, using as a heat detector a sensitive mercury-in-glass thermometer which could be moved along the spectrum. He was surprised to find that the heating power increased towards the red end of the spectrum and did not reach a maximum till the thermometer had been moved beyond the limit of the visible spectrum. He thus established the existence of a form of radiant energy which is refracted by a prism, is less refrangible than red light, and to which the eye is insensitive."Ex private military library stock, so in better condition than most library books. Expect to see sparse library marks and annotations in the text. Cover and binder in very good condition with few markings, as is the spine other than expected age-wear and some discolouration. No Dust jacket. Quick flickthrough of book shows few if any signs of markings of significance other than initial library stamp/page missing. First page partially detached. Acceptable to Good condition throughout. 1957 edition. Quick dispatch Many thanks for supporting independents .
