It was commanded by Lieutenant-General Sir James Willcocks who was the most senior officer n the BEF after Field Marshal Sir John French and General Sir Horace Smith-Dorrien. The corps remained on the Western Front till the end of 1915, when it was transferred to the Middle East, a more suitable theatre of war for Indian Army troops. This history was published at the request and under the authority of the India Office, and apart from General Willcocksâ own memoirs, With The Indians in France, it is the only record of the corps. It is not altogether a happy tale, as the book makes clear. While there was no questioning the bravery of the troops (five Indian/Gurkha VCs) there were problems of climate, reinforcements, officer casualties (the Indian battalion had only 13 British officers, who were first priority targets for the Germans), not to mention mishandling and lack of understanding on the part of the High Command. Total casualties among Indian Army units amounted to 21,413 (each division had, initially, three British battalions and divisional artillery was British). An unusual and fascinating story and history.

SB xi+268 pp Illustrated full page colour uniform plates & B&W illustrations of personalitiesPublished Price £25 From 1796, veterinary surgeons were commissioned into cavalry regiments to care for the British Army's horses and mules. TheirÂwork had previously been carried out by contracted farriers. ThisÂproved inadequate during the Crimean War (1854-56), where many animals died as a result of poor management and care. Following public protests, theÂregimental approach was eventuallyÂreplaced by a centralised Army Veterinary DepartmentÂin 1881.In 1898, veterinary provision forÂmost sick and injured animals was transferred toÂthe same depots as the Army's Remount Service. Formed in 1887, the Remount Service was responsible forÂsupplying replacement horses and mules. This changeÂwas carried outÂagainst the advice of manyÂArmy vets. It soonÂled to a rapid spread of animal disease during the Boer War (1899-1902) and further public outcry. In 1903, a separate Army Veterinary Corps of non-commissioned officers and other ranks was set up. Three years later, the Army Veterinary Department was merged into it.During the First World War, the AVC tripled its officers, and the number of other ranks grew forty-fold. By 1918, nearly half of all veterinary surgeons in Britain were serving in the corps. Engaged on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, Salonika, Mesopotamia and Palestine, it treated sick and wounded cavalry, transport and artillery animals.ÂIt also diversified, dealing with horses that had been gassed, setting up four farriery schools, and even treating camels in the Middle East. Around 80 per cent of the animals it treated were returned to duty. Following the Armistice in 1918, it was granted the 'Royal' prefix in recognition of its service. 2020 N&MP Reprint of Original Edition.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. This is a historically important and thrilling narrative of the deeds of the Indian Corps in Flanders in France in the early days of the Great War. During the course of the First World War, an Indian Army was raised, trained and equipped for service in India alone and upon its frontiers. Soon, this army was deployed from Egypt on the west to China in the east, and had embraced most of the intervening countries. The landing of two Indian Divisions of the Indian Corps in the harbor of Marseilles in September and October 1914 was not only a great event in the chronicles of the Indian Army, but in the entire human history. This book describes the manner in which the soldiers and the drafts and reinforcements by which it was followed, comported themselves in the fierce struggle of 1914-15 to a country where the climate, the language, the people, the culture were all alien to them.
