Price clipped dj; black cloth with gilt spine title; 318 pp; illustrations from photos; index. Book and dust jacket are in Near Fine condition. [M] In his forward, Erle Stanley Gardner states that Sir Sydney Smith, born in New Zealand, was an expert forensic pathologist and medical detective who had written one of the most fascinating autobiographies he had ever read. Some of the titles of the twenty-one chapters hint at the incredible career of the man who appeared before numerous courts helping to solve some of the most complex and mysterious murder cases of the early 20th century: Three Small Bones; Dr. Bell and Sherlock Holmes; Murder as a Business; The Murder of the Sirdar; The Strangling of Chrissie Gall; The Jersey Abortion Case; Accident, Suicide, or Murder?; Clues in Clothes; and the Auckland Arsenic Mystery. Smith (1883-1969) was born in New Zealand, studied at Edinburgh, went to Egypt during WW I where he was appointed Principal Medico-Legal Expert to the Ministry of Justice, and in 1928 returned to Edinburgh, Scotland as Professor of Forensic Medicine. His career in forensic pathology is a delightful read into the fascinating work of solving crimes.
