He passed the Indian Civil Services exam in 1871 and was appointed to what would become the United Provinces in India. He would go to serve between 18711900 in a variety of magisterial and executive positions including terms as district and sessions judge eventually retiring as commissioner in July 1900. By 1910 Smith was settled in Oxford where he joined St. John's College and was appointed a Curator of the Indian Institute . Very hefty, complete set of this monumental work. Volume 7 is lacking the frontispiece tissue guard (seems to never have been placed) but frontispiece is present and otherwise the set is complete with all pages, all tissue guards, all frontispiece plates (5 in color and 4 in sepia). The volumes have clean covers, some wear to paper title patches and some fading of the red lettering on those patches, no owner marks or writing on any pages, no foxing, very solid bindings (no cracking, still tight), minor rubbing tips corners (but never through the cloth). A very big, heavy set weighing almost 26 pounds before packaging, but no additional postage to USA addresses will be charged.
