Condizione: Very Good. Offering this signed antique copy of "The Life of John Lofland, The Milford Bard, The Earliest and Most Distinguished Poet of Delaware. With Comments and Representative Selections from His Works" by William W. Smithers. Philadelphia: Wallace M. Leonard Publisher, 1894, 1st edition. Limited to 500 copies (so stated), but number not recorded on this copy. The author signed and dated an inscription, "To my Friend F. J. Canty, Compliments of Wm W Smithers, June 11, 1914" - in a lovely calligraphy hand on the ffep. Smooth blue-green cloth with stamped gilt on front, spine and edges. Cover edges beveled, gilt top page edges, and deckled side and bottom page edges. Frontispiece portrait of Lofland followed by tissue guard and title page, 311 pp. Overall condition is Very Good. The cover has mild bumping and wear. The pages are lightly age toned, but still bright and clean. Aside from the ffep, there are no other markings. The title page is starting at the bottom; all other pages are attached securely, and the binding is strong. A very nice copy about this regional poet! While John Lofland (1798-1849) was well known in Delaware, he eventually moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where he became known as a friend of Edgar Allan Poe. As for William Smithers, he was a prominent 19th-century Philadelphia attorney and legal scholar who wrote this biography to preserve the legacy of John Lofland; he dedicated the book to the Sons of Delaware of Philadelphia, of which he was an active member.…
