From the front cover: 'An Acidulous Novel.' A fairly rare first edition. I've priced it below the few others. You can see the orange and black covers in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. There is little to no wear on the covers, a tiny nick off the bottom edge of the rear the edges and corners are in very good shape. So is the spine. The red and white lettering on the black spine is very bright. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. There is a little bit of tearing of the paper at the juncture between the blank verso of the half-title page and the title page. Both pages are tightly bound. The pages in the book are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through several times and haven't found any instances of soiling. That's also the case for the inside covers and end papers which together form a white and orange illustration of the Banister Girls. This illustration and the jacket illustration are the work of a Catherine Smolich. There is a tiny nick/tear (1/16th of an inch) off the bottom edge of the rear end paper. The pages are in excellent condition. I'm not seeing any creasing at all. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It is mostly clean with just one small dark spot off the front top edge and a couple of light spots on the white of the rear cover. It has an almost 1 inch tear off its front bottom edge just adjacent to the spine. The spine ends have a little bit of wear. There's also two thin smooth white scuffs on the rear side of the spine. The flaps are in very good condition with just a little bit of toning off their top edges. They are both very clean and there are no tears. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It is protected by a fitted cover. The book is dedicated to Patrick Dennis (her husband), who stood by in emergency with plot wheel, and who furnished the tasteful interiors.' From the dust jacket: 'An acidulous and often very funny novel about sixteen daughters of the "quietly rich" and how they grew.' From the author's New York Times 2000 obituary: 'The widow of Edward Everett Tanner 3rd, who, as Patrick Dennis, wrote ''Auntie Mame,'' Ms. Tanner was herself the author of five books, including the novel ''Miss Bannister's Girls,'' inspired by her experiences as a student at Miss Chapin's, a New York finishing school. Born Louise Frith Stickney, Ms. Tanner grew up in what she called "Edwardian opulence'" on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. She demonstrated her writing talent at an early age by winning Vogue magazine's Prix de Paris. After graduating from Vassar in 1944 she met Mr. Tanner; they were married four years later, preventing her, she once remarked, from having "wound up a very embittered ex-debutante.'" Her wry, wisecracking persona made her the perfect counterpart to her husband, who based one of the main characters in his 1962 best seller, "Genius," on his wife. He also cast her in the role of Pixie Portnoy in his 1961 novel, "Little Me," which was made into a Broadway musical.
