La somministrazione di farmaci gastroretentivi è un approccio per aumentare il tempo di permanenza nello stomaco, indirizzando così il rilascio specifico del farmaco nel tratto gastrointestinale superiore (GI) per ottenere effetti locali o sistemici. Sono in fase di sviluppo diversi approcci alla somministrazione di farmaci con ritenzione nel tratto gastrointestinale, tra cui: sistemi ad alta densità (affondanti) che rimangono sul fondo dello stomaco, sistemi a bassa densità (galleggianti) che provocano galleggiamento nei succhi gastrici, sistemi mucoadesivi che provocano bioadesione alla mucosa dello stomaco, sistemi inflessibili, estensibili o gonfiabili.
