The Spanish sought to spread Christianity among heathen aboriginals; the Russians set out to line their pockets with gold from the sale of precious pelts. But in the end it was hard work, rapidly developing skills, and the richness of the land that made it possible for a diverse people to forge a new nation that grew steadily in power and influence after winning its independence in 1776.
