Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First Thus. With lingering love she gazed at the dispersed Colors of dusk. It pleased her utterly to lose herself in the complex melody or in the curious life to be found in verse. lt was not the primal red but rather grays that spun the fine thread of her destiny, for the nicest distinctions and all spent in waverings, ambiguities, delays. Lacking the nerve to tread this treacherous Labyrinth, she looked in on, whom without, the shapes, the turbulence, the striving rout, (Like the other lady of the looking glass.) The gods that dwell too far away for prayer abandoned her to the final tiger, Fire. --Poem about Susana Soca by Jorge Luis Borges. This beautiful book, one of 500 copies, is in fine condition. La Licorne, published in two periods (Paris 1947 Montevideo 1953), and which represents without a doubt a model of transatlantic literary relations of the mid 20th Century. Susana Soca was relegated to minor status in the literary scene, it is, in part, due to the foreign tendencies and anachronistic elements that she incarnated in a moment of acute Latin-American consciousness. But Susana Soca s place in between two worlds is not limited to her activity as an editor between France and Uruguay. In the spring of 1947 the first number of La Licorne appeared in Paris, under his direction. Fulfilling the inverse destination, it will no longer be the old French culture giving its avant-garde gifts to Uruguay, but it will be a Uruguayan that in situ -in the navel then of knowledge- will spread figures of the two worlds. A woman divided in pretension of union of her cultural heritages. Three other magazines were founded by Uruguayans in Europe; Alfar (1923) by Julio Casal in La Coruña, Cercle et Carre (1930) by Joaquin Torre-Garcia and Michel Suephor in Paris and Mundo Nuevo (1965) by Emir Rodriguez Monegal, also in Paris. Susana Soca collaborated in the Montevidean period of Alfar on several occasions. The first in 1932, with a study by Rainer Maria Rilke and the Cuadernosde Malte Laurid Brigge. In #1 says in his first page: "Cahiers trimestriels de litterature publies sous the direction of Susana Soca and adds: "Textes reunis par Roger Caillois et Pierre David". The circulation was 2,200 copies. The design of the cover corresponds to Valentine Hugo, who will follow doing them in the successive editions, including the Montevideo ones. Rare to find complete with the first french period. Barite/Ceretta p35&77. CobPa.
