E. Oatis, Jr. Softcover, illustrated paper wrappers, side staple bound, 11" x 8.5", 110 pages, illustrated throughout with historic b&w photographs, p…ortraits and advertisements of members of Meridians Black Social and Fraternal Clubs and many Black community business advertisers. GOOD CONDITION: covers pulling/tearing from the staples but still attached, covers have wear, light creasing, small spotting and penned contact info, internally, some penned name and addresses, and light signs of wear from age and use, overall a respectable copy of this historic documentation of the Black urban and cultural landscape in 1974 Mississippi. Scarce, none in OCLC collections worldwide. The African American Business District provided services that Meridian's Black community could not otherwise receive. Jim Crow laws that were passed across the country from 1876 to 1965 kept most of Meridian's businesses segregated. Many white owned businesses either refused to serve Black customers or served them on a limited basis. Beginning around the turn of the 20th century, pioneering African American businesspeople stepped forward to fill the needs of their community. The Council of Organizations formed in 1972 to promote the social, cultural, and educational interests of the African American community in Meridian. With representation from Black civic, social, business, professional, fraternal, and educational clubs, the Council provides scholarships and hosts the celebrated Meridian Picnic each year in Meridian or host regions. Long time Black Community leader and educator C. E. Oatis, Jr. (1925-2011) served as President of the National Council of Meridianiates for 30 years.

New York: United Nations, 1980. First edition, S…tapled wraps, 25 pages, measuring 5.5" x 8.5". This pamphlet studies the roots of the Palestinian conflict and its present state circa 1980. Prepared for, and under the guidance of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. Selected quotes include: "Until recently the Security Council's approach to the Palestine issue has been confined to the framework of its resolution 242 (1967) of nearly 13 years ago. However, the General Assembly, reflecting the will of the majority of the community of nations, has extended recognition of the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.". "The Palestinian people now number approximately 4 million a population larger than that of many Member States of the United Nations. About half-a-million of the Palestinians live in Israel. Another 1,200,000 live in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza. The remainder are in exile; many still in refugee camps, many as foreigners in other countries. The majority of those in exile still hope to return to their own country.". "The United Nations has recognized that a fundamental factor in averting this threat to world peace is to enable the Palestinian people to exercise its inalienable right of self-determination, national independence and sovereignty in Palestine."; Basic Facts About the Palestine Problem New York: Palestine Liberation Organization. Undated but seems to be from the 1970s. Printed on both sides. 8.5" x 11". The handbill lists three sections of informational factoids beginning with "Do You Know" arguing for the right of Palestinians to the territory of Palestine over the state of Israel. One quote states ".1947 recommendation to create a "Jewish State" in Palestine was approved, at the very first vote, only by European, American, and Australasian States.for every Asian State, and every African State (with the exception of the Union of South Africa) voted against it?" Minor fading, and a small .5" tear to the left side of the handbill. Overall very good condition. An early set of pro-Palestinian documents.

Original owner's notes on recto and verso of title page in ink: "Purchased at.8 Sept 1821. Visited the Retreat Saturday aftern., 8 September 1821.with cleanly appearance & admirable arrangement of buildings, the Inmates looked far happier than could have been expected. The Matron & her husband have the most benevolent countenances that we had ever beheld." Light scattered foxing throughout, else unmarked. An account of the groundbreaking work of the Tuke family and the Society of Friends for improving the care and dignity with which mental illness was treated. At a time when the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness was often inhumane, William Tuke stepped forward in 1796 to found The Retreat. Its goal was to create safe, pleasing, and dignified conditions for those being institutionalized; and from its inauguration, The Retreat kept its doors open to public visitors who may want to witness and document the conditions of its campus and patients. In the present work, William's grandson Samuel Tuke publicizes the institution's "internal economy of management" as well as its "mild system of treatment." Transparency is key to continued progress, Tuke asserts; and he wants the Retreat's successes to assist in further advances in the field. "The interests of humanity and science alike call upon us to communicate freely the discoveries we make or the failures which happen to us.If persons engaged in the management of the insane were more generally to publish the results of their observation, we might reasonably hope that the causes of this obscure and affecting disorder would receive some illustration." While William Tuke's work remains revolutionary in improving method of caring for the mentally ill, Samuel Tuke's book "helped popularise the approach.to use the moral treatment method for restoring self-esteem and self-control in individuals" suffering from a range of ailments (Quaker World). As awareness of the model spread, so too did institutions build on its principles, with hospitals emerging in the UK and US.
