A comprehensive discussion of all aspects of Cicisbeism by an academician and abbot of Sezze, who condemns contemporary gallant customs, and especially attacks the nobility for their assiduous pursuit of them. The polemic is set in the form of a dialogue between an 'honest' gentlewoman confessing to her parish priest, Don Gile. The lady timidly defends current fashions, while the priest scornfully examines the authority of various texts, concluding that it was morally impossible to indulge in Cicisbeism without committing a sin. 30 chapters include : when it is wicked for a priest to talk with women, scandals resulting from relationships, wantonness, morning visits, custom of dressing a lady, lady and her cicisbeo in a carriage, custom of offering the arm to a lady, balls and their evils. Only a Naples 1766 edition is recorded in Italian libraries. Traces of waterstaining in right margins, a few tears in outer edges. Leaf D2 repaired in one place without loss.
