Solomon J. Solomon (1860 - 1927) (illustratore). Stanley J. Weyman (1855 - 1928), was an English novelist, who chose to write in the genre of historical fiction. His novels are known for their historical accuracy. This edition of "The Long Night", is an American reprint, and was published in 1903, in New York, by McClure, Phillips & Company as part of their Special Editions Series. The book is illustrated with 16 dramatic plate illustrations by Solomon J. Solomon. This is the Third Printing. All of the book in the Special Edition series were given the same dark blue finely ribbed cloth binding, and gilt-decorated spine, with the publisher's logo of a dolphin and anchor cleverly worked into the design. I'll just mention this here, before continuing : The rear cover has a bit of discoloration , mostly along the joint. (Pease read our full condition report, given below.) "The Long Night" centers on the fictional Claude Mercier, a student of theology. The story finds Claude Mercier embroiled in a number of dangerous situations --- it is the time of many years of war between France and Spain, into which nearly all of Europe was to become involved. The 11th Duke of Savoy, Charles Emmanuel (a real historic personage, and one of the most powerful magnates in Europe). The Duke led his troops to Geneva under cover of night and laid siege to the city. It was a ferocious fight, but Emmanuel and his armored troops were repelled. Geneva has, ever since celebrated this victory with an annual festival called 'L'Escalade'. This is the situation young Mercier finds himself in the middle of. There is danger (of course), , mistaken identities, deception, daring escapes, and furious fighting, etc. It is everything one might expect in such a war-driven environment. How Mercier handles himself and the situations within which he finds himself involved make up the meat of the novel. Esteemed author Graham Greene considered Weyman to be one of the 'key' authors in his life. Other authors who appreciated the works of Weyman include such widely different individuals as Robert Louis Stevenson and Oscar Wilde. Although a few movies have been made from Weyman's books, he is mostly forgotten today. A shame. SERIES : Special Editions TITLE : The Long Night AUTHOR : Stanley J. Weyman (1855 - 1928) ILLUSTRATOR : Solomon J. Solomon (Solomon Joseph Solomon, 1860 - 1927) IMPRINT : McClure, Phillips & Co. PLACE : New York DATE : 1903 EDITION : American reprint -- Third Printing STATUS : Out of Print - OP DETAILS : Trade hardcover; 5 1.4 x 7 1/2", finely ribbed , blue cloth-covered boards and spine; gilt lettering and title on spine; gilt top text-block edge; 16 plate illustrations (printed on calendered paper, with blank backs); 407 pages. CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR -- There is some discoloration on the rear cover (looks as if some whitish material stained the book and then an attempt was made to clean it. There is a small spot of what is obviously the same material on the front cover. There are some barely perceptible wee spots on the spine (likely of the same); the spine extremities are a bit compressed. The spine gilding is still bright. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- There is an inked gift inscription on the front free end-paper that reads : "From your Grandmother's and Great Grandmother's House." - The illustrations display nicely. There is some loss to the top edge of the rear paste-down where it seems that the pastedown had stuck to the rear free end-paper. Else the interior is nice and clean, with no marking.
