Aggiungi al carrello31 S. Mit Abb. Gr.-4°, illustr. Orig.-Umschlag (Solomon Telingater). - Kat. MoMa 839. - Rüthers, Moskau Bauen S. 249 (Abb.). 400 gr.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Quarto 26.5x18.5 cm., wrappers, 28pp., with insert. 5000 copies; includes corrigenda slip. Designed by the October group members Telingater, Gutnov, and Spirov. October was a Constructivist artist collective organized through the efforts of Aleksandr Rodchenko, Aleksei Gan, El Liss…itzky. The elite of Soviet modernism, including Dmitri Moor, Sergei Eisenstein, Boris Ignatovich, the brothers Vesnin, Gustav Klutsis, came together under an aegis of excellence in the visual arts and design. The group was inaugurated in 1928. Rodchenko displayed many of his classic photos in an exhibition in 1931.This manifesto followed, in which the collective called for the consolidation of the proletarian art forces and announced a campaign in aggressive language. Solomon Telingater supported this with a highly dynamic visual design throughout. Authoritarian pressure led to expelling Rodchenko with charges of formalism later that year, and the pressures from above increased steadily to disband the group in 1932. Two holdings found in North American institutions (Yale, Art Gallery Ontario). A near fine copy.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: g to g+. First edition. Folio (12 x 9"). 79, [1]pp. Original silver-lettered burgundy cloth, with round-shape photomontage pasted to front cover. Title page in red and black lettering. This scarce Soviet monograph is entirely dedicated to the art of John Heartfield (1891-1968), a German artist whose anti-N…azi and anti-Fascist photomontages made him a pioneer in the use of art as a political weapon. Heartfield also created book jackets for authors such as Upton Sinclair, as well as stage sets for such noted playwrights as Bertolt Brecht and Erwin Piscator. Designed by Solomon Telingater (1903-1969), a Soviet graphic artist and a founding member of the October group (a collective of Constructivist artists formed in 1928), the book is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w, duo-tone and color photographic reproductions, dadaist works, posters, color reproductions of eight Upton Sinclair book jackets and other art. Of course, his political photomontages for the weekly Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (AIZ) are well represented, along with art for a variety of publications, among them a cover for the daily "Die Rote Fahne," an elaborate piece for Vereingung Internationaler Verlagsonstalten (a German anti-war publication), art for Der Cicerone (a magazine for artists and art collectors) and covers and interiors from Kurt Tucholsky's book "Deutschland Deutschland über alles." Includes a tipped in photographic portrait of Heartfield by Alexander Rodchenko, and a tipped-in photomontage showing Lenin leading the way to new housing construction in Moscow. Scarce paper errata sheet tipped in at rear. Some soiling to front cover. Previous owner's inscription in German "In Erinnerung an den Ostfeldzug (In Memory of the Eastern Campagne)", dated 'Zhitomir, Herbst 1941' on front free endpaper. "Feindspropaganda" (enemy propaganda) in red pencil reproduced on inside of each cover. Ex-library copy, with Russian stamp at inner gutter of title page, at bottom of page 21 and at bottom of last page (not affecting lettering). Text in Russian. Binding in overall good, interior in good to good+ condition. "Heartfield himself regarded Tretjakov's study as the best exposition of his work." (John Heartfield AIZ: Arbeiter-Illustrierte Zeitung, Volks Illustrierte 1930-38 by David Evans; Anna Lundgren (ed), New York, 1992, Kent Fine Art, Inc. page 36).

Aggiungi al carrelloMoscow: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, 1929. Octavo (19.8 × 13.5 cm). Original decorative wrappers; 106 pp. with four sections of different width, forming a tabbed structure. Signed and inscribed by Aleksandra Miroliubova to Galina Chichagova on title. Light soil to wrappers; wrapper corners scuffed; still about very good. A Cons…tructivist time capsule, this catalog of fiction and memoir publications compiled by Gosizdat (the Soviet State Publisher), with original typographic design by the graphic artist Solomon Telingater (1903-1969), is inscribed by fellow Constructivist artist Aleksandra Miroliubova: "To the famous Constructivist Galina Dmitrievna Chichagova as a sign of great and everlasting friendship, from your best friend. 1917-1963". The tabbed sections of the catalog are reminiscent of Telingater and El Lissitzky's collaborative projects, such as the 1927 exhibition catalog on typography "All-Union Printing Trades Exhibition: Guidebook". As Rowell and Wye write: "Despite the content that was far from seductive, these volumes show a remarkable graphic invention, sometimes imaginatively inspired by this very content, and designed for popular appeal" (See: MoMA: The Russian Avant-Garde Book 1910-1934, p. 222). Born in Tiflis (Georgia), Telingater studied at VKhUTEMAS in 1920-1921, often dubbed the Bauhaus of the Soviet Union for its experimental edge. In addition to working on books and catalogs such as this one, Telingater did layout design for the Constructivist architecture periodical "CA" (Contemporary Architecture), as well as architectural periodicals "SSSR na stroike" (USSR in Construction) and "Stroitel'stvo Moskvy" (Construction of Moscow). The author of the inscription, Aleksandra Miroliubova (1898-1987), and the addressee Galina Chichagova (1891-1967) also studied at VKhUTEMAS with artists such as Aleksandr Rodchenko and Liubov Popova. Galina Chichagova, and her sister Olga Chichagova, were part of the first working group of Constructivists headed by Rodchenko, and would go on to incorporate Constructivist design into Soviet children's books. They also famously experimented with typography, turning letters into design elements, with the present volume by Telingater engaging in similar graphic play. This volume is no. 838 in Rowell/Wye, The Russian Avant-Garde Book (pictured on p. 230). As of March 2025, KVK, OCLC show five copies worldwide, of which two in North America.

A splendid example of Telingater's skill as a book designer, combing photomontages with dramatic layout and strips of red paper with white type, tipped in throughout the book. An elaborately constructed book that is an analysis of the Great War and the international and domestic issues and events that coincided and inspired the Russian Revolution. Intricately designed with two concertina foldouts, one depicting dinosaurs. Front inner hinge repaired, otherwise very good condition.
