Colas 1519; Bibliotheque Esmerian IV, lot 62 This is one of the earliest known individual artist portfolios in the new medium of lithography "Isabey, a respected painter though not an academician, clearly did not want to be publicly identified with caricature. The same year he published a portfolio of "serious" lithographic drawings that displayed his full name.A parallel could be drawn to the literary history of the novel, which, despite its success with the public, was not considered a respectable art form; early novelists, too, often concealed their identity.
