The letter begins: 'My dear Thomson | There appears to be some mistake; what I wi…shed to know was, "when my Pay was due at the India House", commencing from the 20th May last - my Pay certificate was included amongst the Papers I left at your House - the sum you mention recoverable on the 29th Inst. is a Family Remittance from India and which you have been in the habit of receiving'. He wrote to the 'C.O. of the Regt.' regarding the 'Mess Wine' before leaving India, but will do so again. He will shortly write 'regarding the disposal of my spare coin'. A postscript concerns a coming trip to Weymouth by 'Lady C.'.

Smith's letter headed by him 'Private'. He begins: 'Dear Sir | I have not yet received the proof of my article on Hannay, for Temple Bar, which you kindly promised to send me so…me months ago.' He presumes that Bentley is aware that the Echo has 'recently changed hands', and announces that he is 'now the principal Editor, & I may say that one of our new features will be the prompt reviewing of all works which may be sent in by your firm & others'. Unsigned note by George Bentley: 'Tell Clowes [publishers of Temple Bar] to send me two proofs of this article here by return of post, & let me have this letter back as a reminder'.

The subject is laid out at the start: 'In the first volume of Mr. Dickens' Life, just published, I read an account of Mr. DICKENS' literary connexion with my father, which it is impossible fo…r me to leave without remark. The biographer therein presents my father in a character which all who knew him would repudiate as belonging to him. | I should mention, that on my father's death, his papers coming into my possession, I made overtures through a mutual friend of Mr. FORSTER and myself, for the destruction of any letters that bore reference to a former disagreement between Mr. DICKENS and my father. [.] My application to Mr. FORSTER was without result, and Mr. FORSTER professed not to understand the meaning of the application itself.' Describes the 'succession of agreements' between Dickens and Bentley, 'every one of which was more in favour of Mr. DICKENS than the last - a conclusive proof at whose instigation they had been changed'. Scarce: the only copy on COPAC at the British Library. This copy from the Bentley family archive.

Aggiungi al carrelloSee the entries for Robinson and Cooke in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, folded twice. Addressed to 'My dear Mr Cooke'. Cooke's 'friendly note' about the time he 'proposed setting out for Deal' was received on the Thursday, and the Robinsons are 'glad indeed to hear that your dear Mother is again restore…d to her usual health'. The Robinsons think that 'change of occupation & fresh air together, may have the desired effect both as regards yourself & your son Conrad'. The present season has been a 'trying' one, and Robinson gives a brief description of his own indisposition. He hopes that he can meet Cooke 'on Thursday week, the day before the private view'. A reference to 'Mr & Mrs Cope' follows. Robinson is sorry that the 'programme' Cooke has 'sketched' leaves 'little chance of our seeing you before you return from Stratford'. He ends by informing Cooke that his wife is 'pretty well'. Conrad Cooke's entry in Grace's Guide stresses his electrical work (he designed and installed first electric light on the Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament) and his early promotion of the telephone.

One of his daughters has 'written down Stories one or two of which have already appeared, and she would be very happy to avail herself… of an opportunity of writing something' for the annual, so he asks him to 'ascertain whether your Father would like to insert a short Nouvellette [sic] to the extent of 4 to 5 pages'. The subject is presumably Roscoe's daughter Jane Elizabeth St John (1829-1906) was generally known as Mrs. Horace Roscoe St John, author of 'Audubon the Naturalist' (1856), 'Englishwomen and the Age' (1860), a pamphlet on the condition of women, and two historical works, 'Masaniello of Naples' (1865) and 'The Court of Anna Carafa' (1872).
