For John George Jackson (c.1798-c.1851), architect of Leamington Priors, pupil of P. F. Robinson, see Lyndon F. Cave's 'Royal Leamington Spa' (1988). He erected Newbold Lodge on the site of Strawberry Cottage in the early 1830s. See the entry for the recipient William Hookham Carpenter (1792-1866), later Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, in the Oxford DNB. At the time of the present letter Carpenter was working for his father the Old Bond Street bookseller James Carpenter (c.1768-1852). 2pp, 8vo. Bifolium. Addressed with postmark on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr Wm Carpenter | New Bond Street'. In fair condition, lightly aged. Spikeholes through the centre of both leaves, and also Jackson's signature, discreetly repaired with archival tape. Folded three times. The letter begins: 'If your Father will be so good as to send to Messrs. Ladbrookes Kingscote & Gillman Bank Bldgs, they are advised to pay to Mr Carpenter the sum of £18 . 6 . 2 on Monday the 5th. and when convenient I shall be obliged by receipt.' He is sorry to hear of Mrs Carpenters indisposition, and hopes 'that the approaching Summer will re instate her in health'. He continues: 'You laugh at the bust on my Pedestal but I can assure you he is one of the Worthies, ay & a Warwickshire Worthy. It is William Shakespeare whom I placed there on the Anniversary of his Birth Day Ap 23d.' If Carpenter has 'any communication with Mr Woolryche', Jackson would like to 'ascertain his ideas on the following subject. When last here he spoke of his desire to have a villa in the immediate neighbourhood, and one of my building men is shortly about to erect a Villa in a very beautiful situation. The work was the result of Audubon's collaboration with John Bachman, a Lutheran Pastor who had studied quadrupeds from his youth and who was recognised as an authority in the United States. The two began their association when Audubon stayed with Bachman and his family in Charleston for a month in 1831. Audubon knew that Bachman's contribution was critical but had to fight hard to convince his friend to take part. Bachman eventually relented, with the proviso that all profits, and expenses, were to be the Audubons: the work was expected to show a healthy return and he was eager to benefit his sons-in-law Victor and John Woodhouse Audubon.In 1898 Charles E. Lauriat (1842-1920) decided to became a bookseller only and leave the publishing to his former partner Dana Estes. So their partnership was dissolved. Dana Estes continued to publish books as Dana Estes and Company. Lauriat bought out the stock of Estes and Lauriat and on June 1, 1898 started his retail establishment at 301 Washington Street, Opposite "Old South". He sold the Estes books as well as the books of other publishers He moved to larger quarters in 1906 just down the way at 385 Washington Street. The six items in fair condition, with light signs of age and wear. The four letters all with Morley's expansive signature ('Sheridan Morley'). The first letter (9 March 1970) begins: 'It seems a long time (indeed it is) since I used to buy books from your shop in St Martin's Court; but I thought I'd try to re-establish contact with you because I have started - in a very small way - to sell theatre and film books myself in the basement of James and Pauline Scudamore's secondhand bookshop in the Earl's Court Road.' In a long letter (2pp., 8vo) on 16 May he writes that he would be 'delighted to take over as much of your remaining stock as I can afford, and you want to dispose of', but 'with a son of 2 and another baby imminent' he can 'only afford to make the bookselling a part-time career; most of my work is done as an interviewer for BBC television, and the arrangement I have with the Scudamores is an ideal one for me in that I have one room of their shop to call my own, but when I am not there (ie about 3 days of the week) they "caretake" it for me and people buying books pay for them at their desk upstairs'. He continues with an explanation of the arrangements. Morley ends the letter with a promise to 'pass on yours to Pauline, James and my godfather Sewell'. In the third letter (15 May) he explains that he has been 'out of London filming for the BBC', but that he would be interested in the items Duncan offers, but will have difficulty raising the £80 cost ('not that I question your valuation, merely that we are under-capitalised'). He offers to visit Duncan in Southampton to discuss the matter further. The telegram (28 May) attempts to change the date of the visit. The last letter (1 June) regards payment through a money order. The carbon copy of Duncan's letter (2pp., 4to) is dated 14 March 1970, is signed, and discusses Morley's proposal in detail.…
