Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Green Mountain Scorched LandA Memoir by Songlin RenIn August 1966, when Ren was twelve, Red Guards stormed into his home in Beijing. His parents, maternal grandmother, and maternal aunt were beaten, humiliated, and expelled from the city. Less than a month later, his grandmother-having sustained severe injuries from the beatings-passed away. In the years that followed, his parents and aunt also perished as a result of violence, torture, and starvation. During the ten-year Cultural Revolution, four of the six family members died unnatural deaths. His mother was only 53 years old when she died.Green Mountain Scorched Land is Ren's firsthand account of that decade. Written from the perspective of a child who suddenly became the sole provider for a broken family, the memoir records home raids, public struggle sessions, forced exile to the countryside, chronic hunger, and the daily struggle to survive under a regime that treated ordinary people as class enemies. It is also the story of a boy who refused to break.More than a personal history, the book places one family's destruction within the larger catastrophe of Mao's China. The book shows how political campaigns, class labels, and state violence tore apart ordinary households, and how the consequences of that era continue to shape China today. The book's title carries a dual meaning. First, it alludes to a moment of quiet encouragement from a lady who shared a similar fate; she whispered a Chinese proverb to the author: 'As long as the green mountains remain, there will be no lack of firewood'-a quiet insistence on endurance in the face of desperation. Second, the author likens traditional China to these 'green mountain,' while viewing the 'China' ravaged and devastated by the Chinese Communist Party as a 'scorched land.'Songlin Ren was forced to drop out of school before even completing his primary education. He later managed to master the entire secondary school curriculum through self-study. Following the restoration of the national university entrance examination system, he earned admission to a university with outstanding results and eventually went on to obtain a Ph.D. in physics in the United States. For readers of firsthand accounts of the Cultural Revolution and the Chinese communist regime, this is a clear-eyed, unflinching record of what the era did to one family-and to three generations. …
