Das Ergebnis dieses Kontakts ist dabei nicht nur auf individueller sondern vor allem auch auf gesellschaftlicher Ebene sehr unterschiedlich, wie auch Anderson in seinem Werk von 2006 beschreibt: 'When two languages come into contact, the outcomes are multiple and varied' (Anderson 2006: 19). Sprachkontakt ist per se jedoch nicht nur auf zwei Sprachen bzw. sprachliche Varietäten limitiert. Was geschieht also, wenn mehrere Sprachen und Varietätenaufeinandertreffen Wird das Ergebnis dieser Kontaktsituation noch diverser Ein Land, das von solch einer Multilingualität und gleichzeitig auch von einer starken Multikulturalität geprägt ist, stellt der zentralamerikanische Staat Belize dar. Obwohl es mit rund 23.000km gerade einmal die Fläche des US-Bundesstaats Massachusetts umfasst (vgl. CIA 2013), ist das Land von einer enormen kulturellen, ethnischen und linguistischen Vielfalt charakterisiert. Indianische, europäische und afrikanischesowie karibische, nordamerikanische, indische und asiatische Elemente offerieren ein Konglomerat von Bedeutungen, aus denen sich die Identität(en) der belizischen Bevölkerung konstituieren. Doch was bedeutet eine solche kulturelle, sprachliche und ethnische Vielfalt für ein Land und seine Bevölkerung Kann aufgrund dieser Diversität überhaupt so etwas wie eine belizische Nationalidentität entstehen - vorallem, in Anbetracht dessen, dass das Land erst seit 1981 unabhängig ist Welche Folgen hat die Sprachkontaktsituation zudem auf die einzelnen Sprachen und deren Sprecher Diesen Fragestellungen widmet sich die vorliegende Seminararbeit. Nachdem zunächst einige geografische und sozioökonomische Eckdaten zu Belize vorgestellt werden, wird anschließend die historische Entwicklung des Landes näherbetrachtet. Im zweiten Teil der Arbeit stehen dann die ethno-linguistischen Gruppen des Landes im Vordergrund. Es wird dabei nicht nur auf die einzelnen Sprachen eingegangen, sondern auch auf die aktuelle Sprachkontaktsituation im Land. Abschließend widmet sich die Arbeit der Frage der belizischen Identität.
