This volume studies the… late medieval German heroic epics from several angles: questions of genre, cycle development, meta level and intertextuality. German description: Dietrich von Bern gilt als grosster aller Helden in der deutschen Literatur des Mittelalters. Die Geschichten uber seine Kampfe gegen Recken, Riesen, Zwerge und Drachen fanden bis ins 16. Jahrhundert hinein ein breites Publikum. Mit alten Heldendichtungen wie dem "Hildebrandslied"', aber auch dem "Nibelungenlied", teilen die Texte um Dietrich und seine Recken sowie die Helden Ortnit und Wolfdietrich Themen wie Kampf, Herrschafts- und Gefolgschaftsproblematik. Gleichzeitig offnen sie sich auch anderen Themen, Erzahlmodellen und Heldenkonzeptionen, wie sie insbesondere im hofischen Roman, in der Brautwerbungsdichtung und in den deutschen Chansons de geste zu finden sind. Die Studie untersucht die spaten Heldendichtungen z.B. nach Gattungszugehorigkeit, Zyklusbildung, Metaebene und Intertextualitat. Dabei werden Fragen der Gattungstheorie mit Theoriebausteinen der Intertextualitatstheorie verbunden. Innovativ ist insbesondere die Analyse solcher Verweise, die nicht einzelnen Texten oder Gattungsmustern gelten, sondern Inhalten der mundlichen Uberlieferung, also der Heldensage. Dazu kommt die Einbeziehung des fur die spate Heldendichtung zentralen Aspekts der Fassungsproblematik. Die theoretischen Erkenntnisse werden in zahlreichen Textanalysen im zweiten Teil der Arbeit erprobt.
