Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics - English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 1,7, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik ), course: Syntactic Questions, language: English, abstract: Although the idea of valency is not new in the field of linguistics, it seems to have receivedrelatively little attention up to now. Lucien Tesnière, who became known as the developer ofthe so called 'dependency grammar', was one of the first linguists who described thecapacity of a verb to bind a certain number of 'actants'1 (cf. Tesnière 1980, 385-386). In hisposthumously published book 'Eléments de syntaxe structurale'2 (1959) he called thisphenomenon 'valency'. Later on, other linguists adopted his notion, modified and adapted it.One of these linguists is Peter Eisenberg, a German philologist, who wrote some recentworks on grammar in which the role of verb valency is often in the center of attention.Because a period of thirty years had passed since Tesnière's first attempt to define thephenomenon of valency in linguistics, Eisenberg's approach is a lot more detailed andincludes different criteria for he had the opportunity to contribute his knowledge of othertheories which were created after Tesnière's book had been published. This term paper will draw a comparison of two works written by the authors mentionedabove with special regard to the words which are dependent on verbs. Since the verb is oftenin the center of attention when the notion of valency is concerned, the group of the otherwords which are 'governed' by the verb does not seem to be examined in the same way.Furthermore there does not even seem to be a standard term for such words (perhaps exceptfor 'arguments' (cf. Meyer 2005, 30), but even the notion of arguments is used in diverseways), so that I will use the word 'dependents' to refer to every possible linguistic elementwhich can be bound by a verb. The main aim of this paper will not only be to provide a small overview of dependents invalency theories, but also to illustrate the pros and cons of each of these theories in acomparison at the end.To introduce the reader into the topic, a small overview of the notion of valency will begiven at the beginning of the term paper. Later on, the most important aspects concerningdependents of both theories will be presented separately. After having compared the twoworks, pointed out the main discrepancies and having stated their benefits respectively theirdeficiencies, a final conclusion will be given. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik: Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft), course: Variety in English, language: English, abstract: Loreto Todd states in his book 'Green English' one very important sentence concerning English in Ireland that depicts the basis on which this term paper is built upon: 'The language spoken in Ireland is similar to the language spoken in England - similar but by no means identical'.This term paper will deal with the kind of English spoken in Ireland today1 and how it differs from English spoken in England or America2, especially taking the influence of the native language of Ireland into account. Because of the space limitations, it will only serve as an overview covering the most important grammatical features in which Irish English (IrE) differs from Standard English (StE), for instance phenomena concerning phonetics, word stress, rhythmic retentions, syntax and semantics. Concerning each field of study some striking features of IrE will be described and explained by the use of examples. It will be of special interest to what extent the differences date back to the influence of the Irish mother tongue Gaelic3. Since English is a relatively new language in Ireland, it will be the aim of this paper to find out if today's linguistic phenomena of IrE can be traced back to the period of the language shift from Irish to English. While by now most of the Irish people's mother tongue is English, it is still probable that the people are still influenced by their past - at least by means of language. Because of this certain approach towards IrE, all the analysed features in this term paper will be a selection of features that somehow have to do with the native language of Ireland. Before the analysis of grammatical features, a brief overlook over the terminology concerning the term 'Irish English' as well as an outline of the history of the English language in Ireland will be given. After the analysis, a last part will be stated in which it will be of interest to how far the Irish accent can be seen as part of the national identity of the Irish people. In the end, a final conclusion will be stated. It is important to mention that although the term IrE is used for a general variety of English in Ireland, a lot of internal distinctions could be made. These accents are linked to different regions and sometimes even differ from city to city. Because of this complexity of the topic, this termpaper will not go into detail concerning the different accents.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik I), course: Hauptseminar 'American Drama', language: English, abstract: Tennessee Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams, is not only known for being a 'talented, perceptive and influential American playwright' (Day 1987, vii), but also for his frequent use of symbols. 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (1947), the work which will be dealt with in this paper, is a good example for of usage, since it contains a lot of different kinds of symbolism, for example concerning colours, names, music and many more.Numerous works will be found, if anyone searches for essays about symbolism in Williams' works. Moreover, it is common knowledge that Streetcar is a play which deals not only superficially with a woman going insane, but a play which 'bring[s] into violent contrast a neurotic woman's dream world and the animalistic realism of her brother-in-law' (back of the book in the Diesterweg edition). But since there does not seem to be any work which deals with the question of how exactly Williams drew this contrast by use of symbolism, it will be my aim in this paper to analyse this question. Consequently, I will try to point out the main symbols with which Williams underlined the contrast between realism and illusion, especially considering names, colours, clothes, light, music and certain rituals of the main characters. In the second part of this paper, I will deal with the question to what degree the main characters Stanley and Blanche are strictly opposed to each other or may have something in common. I will also deal with the meaning of the ending concerning realism and illusion. Therefore, what will be discussed are the most striking antinomies and similes in the main characters' attitudes. A general conclusion about the topic of symbolism in Tennessee Williams' Streetcar will be given in the end.To introduce the reader to the topic and also to justify my choice of symbols, a definition of the notion of symbolism will be given right at the beginning of this paper. This will be done by including different approaches, so that a broader definition can be given. Furthermore, for this paper is based on symbolism in Streetcar by Tennessee Williams, it may also be very interesting for the reader to have a look at Williams' attitude towards symbols which will be done at the end of the second chapter. One last point to mention in this introduction is that due to space restrictions not all symbols concerning the topic of illusion and realism can be discussed in this paper. Nevertheless, it is my aim to present the most striking ones. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. …

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,7, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik ), course: Readings in Australian Aboriginal Literature, Proseminar, language: English, abstract: More than 230 years ago, Captain James Cook, a British explorer, 'discovered' the Australian continent and claimed it for Great Britain. From then on, the Indigenous Australian population experienced a drastic cultural and social change. Today around '68% of the Aboriginal population [.] live in urban environements' (Knudsen 2004, S. 73). Despite the progress in assimilation, smoldering sources of social friction between Aboriginal people and the white community, like unemployment, poverty, alcoholism and bad health care, remain. These subjects often occur in literature of indigenous authors, especially poetry, 'the most popular genre of Aboriginal creative expression inEnglish' (Shoemaker 1989, S. 179).Another important theme, which is often worked up in indigenous poetry, is the urban Aboriginal's relation to their cultural heritage, which will be the topic of this termpaper. This theme is of high topicality nowadays, considering the increasing number of Aboriginals living in urban environments. It will be important to figure out to what extent the Indigenous's past does still play a role in their present lives. Also it will be of interest if they still feel connected with their cultural past, if nature still plays a decisive role, even in'civilised Aboriginals'' lives, and how they generally feel about their situation of being part of two significantly differing cultures. Therefore, the poems will be analysed on the basis of the subtopics nature, identity and past. The aim of this paper is to provide a small overview of recent poetic works dealing with this topical theme of the urban Aboriginals relation to their cultural heritage to draw the reader's attention to a new, probably even largely unknown part of Aboriginal's lives. This termpaper will first give a short overview about the Aboriginal poetry in general and the authors lives. Later on, poems in which subjects like past, civilisation or nature occur will be analysed. Poems by Oodgeroo Noonuccal and Jack Davis will act as exemplary works to be analysed and interpreted. Therefore, at the beginning of the termpaper some short biographical facts about these poets will be given to become acquainted with their culturalbackground. 20 pp. Englisch.…

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Didactics - English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,7, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik I), course: Hauptseminar 'American Drama', language: English, abstract: Tennessee Williams, born Thomas Lanier Williams, is not only known for being a 'talented, perceptive and influential American playwright' (Day 1987, vii), but also for his frequent use of symbols. 24 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 2,3, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik: Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft), course: Variety in English, language: English, abstract: Loreto Todd states in his book 'Green English' one very important sentence concerning English in Ireland that depicts the basis on which this term paper is built upon: 'The language spoken in Ireland is similar to the language spoken in England - similar but by no means identical'.This term paper will deal with the kind of English spoken in Ireland today1 and how it differs from English spoken in England or America2, especially taking the influence of the native language of Ireland into account. Because of this complexity of the topic, this termpaper will not go into detail concerning the different accents. 32 pp. Englisch. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,7, RWTH Aachen University (Institut für Anglistik ), course: Readings in Australian Aboriginal Literature, Proseminar, language: English, abstract: More than 230 years ago, Captain James Cook, a British explorer, 'discovered' the Australian continent and claimed it for Great Britain. Therefore, at the beginning of the termpaper some short biographical facts about these poets will be given to become acquainted with their culturalbackground.…
