Ce fameux prédicateur, connu en particulier pour son zèle contre les Calvinistes, s'était fait remarquer par Catherine de Médicis qui en avait fait le prédicateur du roi en 1567. On sait par ailleurs que Sorbin fut l'un des principaux instigateurs de la tristement célèbre nuit de la St Barthélemy (1572). Ces sermons sont dédiés à Françoise de Fontenay, abbesse de l'abbaye de Notre-Dame de Nevers. Ils sont le reflet de la pensée dogmatique catholique de ce temps là.
