Cover and frontispiece design by Zdenek Rykr, the author's husband, who was a renowned painter and designer. Milada Soucková (1898-1983) was one of the earliest Czech writers to use the stream-of-consciousness techniques in her fiction. In 1936 she joined the Prague linguistic circle. After WWII she was the Czech cultural attaché in Washington and remained to emigrate permanently after the communist putsch in 1948. She became a librarian and held prominent positions in universities from the 1960s and is credited for amassing one of the largest Czech book collections outside of Czechoslovakia at Harvard's Widener Library. Reprint of a private print dating from 1939, a coproduction of Milada Souckova (1899-1983) and her husband Zdenek Rykr (1900-1940). Significant poetic collection of Milada Souckova, illustrated with colourful illustrations by Zdenek Rykr. These linocut illustrations are among the last works of Zdenek Rykr (before his suicide in fear of the Gestapo). Zdenek Rykr is an eminent solitary artist belonging to the Czech interwar Avant-garde. He is famous not only for his free paintings but also for his work in the advertising industry (for the Orion chocolate company for example). The graphics to the book were created together with the poems and question the current problems of human society; in terms of time and topic, they are close to Rykr's existential drawings of women in baths. The writer Milada Souckova was part of the cultural scene of the Czech interwar Avant-garde; she also colaborated with the Prague Linguistic Circle; after the war, she emigrated to the USA. "The Speaking Zone" is one of the best pieces of Czech poetry of the 20th Century. This extensive work comments on the pathetic anxieties of the time, asks for the reasons of the vast spiritual crisis in the age of reason and finds shelter in language; at the same time critically evaluates the poetic practices of the Avant-garde. The book contains six large (15 x 30 cm) full page multi-coloured illustrations + two-coloured cover by Zdenek Rykr. The book has the original typographic layout.
