Aggiungi al carrelloCloth, 8vo, xxxv, 553 pp, ills, facs. The bibliography occupies pages 367-516 and describes some 159 works. From the blurb: "Here is presented for the first time a complete and scholarly account of the prose writings of the Catholic Refugees of the first half of the reign of Elizabeth - a period which has been well described as the Golden Age of Recusant Literature. That these writings are a part of the main fabric of English Literature and that the authors exercised an influence upon contemporary English life and letters, both directly and indirectly, far wider than has generally been supposed, it is the main purpose of this book to show. That many of them, along with the best of their contemporaries, were capable of writing "a glorious prose style - straightforward, vivid, simple in the best sense, essentially dramatic" will be evident to all who read the numerous extracts from their books which go to illustrate the historical and critical survey herein set forth. Of particular importance is the bibliography which forms the second part of Dr. Southern's work. This deals with the many problems connected with the books themselves and it may be regarded as indispensable for all future researchers in this particular field of English scholarship." Front joint split leaving the spine-panel attached at the rear joint as a flap, covers heavily faded, top edge duststained, stamp on verso of title-page, contents otherwise good.
