Aggiungi al carrelloVery good. Backed on archival tissue for stability. Exhibits light wear along original fold lines. Some spotting and foxing evident. Exhibits a small area of infill. Blank on verso. Size 38.75 x 22.75 Inches. This is an 1859 U.S. Coast Survey nautical chart or map of the southern coast of Maine. Depicting portions of coastal Maine from the mouth of the Kennebec River and Seguin Island to Goat Island and Kennebunkport (although Kennebunkport is unlabeled), innumerable depth soundings are recorded here in aid of navigation. Coastal islands abound and are nearly all identified, along with many lighthouses, such as the Goat Island Light, the Wood Island Light, the Cape Elizabeth Light, the Seguin Island Light, the Pond Island Light, and the Breakwater Light near Portland. Coves, points, and bays along the coastline are also identified. Tables detailing the region's lighthouses, tides, and magnetic variations are included along the right border, along with notes concerning the depth soundings and abbreviations employed on the map. Publication History and Census The creation of this chart, as was the case with all U.S. Coast Survey charts, was a collaboration. C. O. Boutelle and T. J. Cram undertook triangulation work, while the topography was executed by A. W. Longfellow and I. Hull Adams. The hydrography was executed by parties under the command of M. Woodhull, S.D. Trenchard, and W.G. Temple. The whole work was compiled and produced under the supervision of A. D. Bache, one of the most influential Superintendents in the history of the U.S. Coast Survey. An example is cataloged in OCLC and is part of the institutional collection at the University of Maine. References: OCLC 180672031. …

Aggiungi al carrelloGood. Large tear extending 7 inches into the map on center bottom, closed on verso. Professionally repaired and backedonlinen. Size 37.5 x 30 Inches. A remarkably detailed nautical map or chart originally produced by the U.S. Coast Survey in 1867, updated to 1878, of the Atlantic coast of New England from Wells and Ogunquit in Maine to Gloucester on Cape Ann, Massachusetts. A Closer Look Coverage ranges from the beaches below Wells (the town itself is off the map just to the north) and Ogunquit in Maine, through Portsmouth and the brief section of New Hampshire coastline, and through Newburyport, Ipswich, Rockport, and Gloucester, Massachusetts. Fathoms, shoals, hazards, islands, lighthouses and beacons (also listed in a table at left), buoys (marked in red and black), and other navigational essentials are noted in tremendous detail and to a distance far from the coast, out into open ocean. Extensive information is also provided, via abbreviations (listed in another table at left), on the type of mud, rock, and other material at the ocean bottom. Additional data is provided at left, including tables of tides and notes on soundings and the shifting of buoys and lights. The land along the coast is illustrated to a minute degree of precision, to roughly a mile inland (at bottom up to the Eastern Railroad, running between Boston and Portland, Maine), with individual farms and buildings indicated. At bottom-left are two profile views of the coastline near Thatcher's Island off Cape Ann and the entrance to the harbor at Gloucester, respectively. Fishtown At this time, Gloucester was the center of the New England fishing industry, staffed by immigrants from the Azores and Italy, and a thriving commercial port as well. The fishing industry was long established in the city but had fallen to a nadir in the early 19th century before reviving in the mid-19th century. Cod fishing was particularly important to the city's economy, and improved charts such as this were invaluable to mariners working the increasingly crowded shores and waters off New England. Still, fishing was a dangerous business. In 1879, just a year after this chart's publication, 279 fishermen died when their ships were lost at sea, with one particularly nasty gale on Georges Bank in February 1879 sinking 13 ships carrying nearly 150 crew members. For the town's tercentenary in 1923, a large bronze statue was commissioned to memorialize the fisherman lost at sea throughout the town's history; today, the statue is one of the town's main landmarks. Publication History and Census This chart was originally published in 1867 by the U.S. Coast Survey, then re-issued in 1877 with corrections, and the present example was printed in 1878 with minor changes to navigational aids (i.e. the magnetic variation or declination in the compasses). The OCLC notes it among the holdings of Stanford University, the University of Chicago, the University of Virginia, the Boston Public Library, Salem State University, and the Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Bremen. Aggiungi al carrello1st Edition. Very good. Only a few minor imperfections. Size 19.25 x 27 Inches. This is a beautiful 1786 map of the southern Alaska coastline by the French explorer La Perouse. When drawn, it was the only map of this region not based on the surveys of Captain Cook. A Closer Look The map covers a long stretch of the southern Alaska Coast, roughly from Mt. St. Elias (St. Elie) in the north to Moresby Island in the south, taking in the settlements of Yakutat and Sitka. Some place names have changed (especially the Spanish ones) while others have simply been Anglicized or only slightly modified; for example, Port Neker at the center, towards the bottom, is now known as Necker Bay. The coast is not very easily recognizable compared to a modern map since La Perouse did not explore the many inlets and fjords. The progress of the Boussole and the Astrolabe along the coast from late June through mid-August 1786 is also shown. The map is also a nautical chart, noting depths along the coast. Though it made many important discoveries, La Perouse's journey was dangerous and ill-fated, even more so than the last British voyage of Captain James Cook, which it was meant to complement. Numerous crew were killed in incidents during the voyage, including 42 men lost while exploring Port des Français towards the top center. Ultimately, the entire crew died after wrecking on the reefs off Vanikoro, an island in the Santa Cruz group of the Solomon Islands. It is worth noting that not long after Le Perouse's voyage, Russian influence in this area increased through the Russian-American Company. In 1799, the Fort of Archangel Michael (???? ????????? ???????) was established at Sitka, only to be destroyed in 1802 in a battle with the Tlingit in which nearly all the Russians were killed. The settlement was reestablished as New Archangel or Novo Arkhangelsk two years later, and it remained one of the major settlements in Alaska until Russia sold Alaska to the United States. Publication History and Census This map was drawn by La Perouse in 1786 and published posthumously as Plate No. 17 in the first edition of the Atlas du Voyage de la Perouse . It was engraved by Bouclet, edited by Hérault (no further information is available on these individuals), and published in Paris by the Imprimerie de la Republique in 1797 (Year 5 of the revolutionary regime). Due to variations in cataloging the map, it is difficult to precisely determine its distribution, but both the map and the entire atlas are known to be held by a handful of libraries in North America and Europe.
