This is an early account of Makassar (Sulawesi Island), an important trading centre in Indonesia at this time. Cornelis Speelman was born in Rotterdam 1628. At the age of sixteen he travelled to the East Indies, where he remained for the rest of his life in the service of the Dutch East India Company. From the beginning of the 16th century, Makassar was the major trading centre in eastern Indonesia where Chinese, Indians, Arabs, Siamese, Javanese and Malays came to exchange goods (spices, metal goods, textiles, gold, copper, pearls, etc.). Makassar was Sulawesi's major port and centre of the powerful Gowa and Tallo Sultanates. The first Europeans (Portuguese sailors) arrived in the 16th century and the Dutch followed in the early 17th century with the aim of creating a hegemony over the spice trade. In 1666 Speelman led a Dutch expedition to Makassar, aided by Bugis soldiers, succeeding in destroying the strongholds of the Sultanate of Gowa. The Treaty of Bongaja was signed in 1667 between Sultan Hasanudin of Gowa and the Dutch East India Company (VOC) which meant that all traders from Gowa had to apply for licences in order to do business in regions controlled by the VOC. Speelman was Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies between 1681 and his death in 1684. A few library copies are found in Germany, one at Cornell and one in the Netherlands. We don't know if this edition was issued with a map. The original Dutch edition doesn't have any map but a few library copies of the German edition do, while others do not have a map. Not in Cordier. Rare first and only edition of the German translation of the account of the expedition against the Kingdom of Makassar in the years 1666 to 1669, under command of Cornelis Speelman (1628-1684) on behalf of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The work was translated from the original Dutch published at Amsterdam in 1669. Speelman, a Dutch admiral and governor-general of the VOC, lead the expedition against the Sultan of Gowa (= Makassar), together with Radjah Palacca, King of the Bougainese, aiming to keep trade with Makassar exclusive to the Dutch. The sultan wanted to open the port to all nationalities and, as a prominent Islamic leader, he opposed the Dutch conversion of Islamic islanders to Calvinism. The sultan was defeated and submitted to VOC control with the treaty of Bungaya (18 November 1668).Without the engraved map included in some copies. Title-page slightly browned with a faint manuscript note in the upper margin, and a minor stain on the last leaf. The sultan of Makassar (now Ujung Pandang), the leading representative of Islam in the region, was especially hostile to the Dutch missionary drive. He was also determined to protect Makassar's position as an international harbour for the spice trade, open to all nations. With the support of the English, Danes and Portuguese, he had long resisted the efforts of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to monopolize the spice trade. Alarmed by this development, Batavia in 1666 sent an expedition against Makassar led by Cornelis Speelman (1628-1684). He forced the sultan in 1669 to conclude a treaty which the Dutch, obtained a monopoly of Makassar's trade and succeeded in bringing South Celebes under Dutch supremacy with the help of the Bugis people who were being oppressed by the Macassarese.
