Der Silbenschnitt nimmt als phonologisches Unterscheidungsmerkmal der sogenannten Kurz- und Langvokale in linguistischen Darstellungen des Standarddeutschen seit Beginn der 90er Jahre einen immer breiteren Raum ein. Die Existenz eines akustisch-phonetischen Korrelates des Silbenschnitt…es wurde bislang immer angezweifelt, was zur Konsequenz hatte, daß dem Silbenschnitt der Anschein eines theoretischen Konstruktes anhaftete. In großen Teilen der wissenschaftlichen Diskussion hatte dies eine Ablehnung der phonologischen Silbenschnitttheorie zur Folge. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird auf der Basis von standarddeutschen Daten ein akustisches Korrelat des Silbenschnittes nachgewiesen, das sich in Form von charakteristischen Energieverläufen sanft vs. scharf geschnittener Vokale beschreiben läßt. Eine Konstrastuntersuchung an Daten aus Nicht-Silbenschnittsprachen (Finnisch, Tschechisch, Französisch) bestätigt das gefundene Korrelat. Es wird dann der Frage nachgegangen, ob und für welche Dialekte des Deutschen sich das Silbenschnittkorrelat nachweisen läßt. Zusätzlich werden Ergebnisse akustisch-phonetischer Messungen zu qualitativen und quantitativen Eigenschaften der Dialekte vorgestellt. Silbenschnitt bezeichnet die Art und Weise, wie ein Vokal durch einen nachfolgenden Konsonanten modifiziert ('geschnitten') wird. Das Silbenschnittkonzept ist damit ein prosodischer Erkldrungsansatz, der den stdrker segmentell ausgerichteten Konzepten wie z.B. Vokalquantitdt bzw. -qualitdt entgegengestellt werden kann. Tonakzente etablieren lexikalisch-phonologische Kontraste auf der Ebene des Wortes mit Hilfe kontrastierender Intonationsverldufe.
