Description : Charles Spindler a vécu la Première Guerre mondiale depuis son hameau de Saint-Léonard, à une vingtaine de kilomètres à l'arrière du front situé sur les sommets vosgiens. Trop âgé pour être mobilisable, il passa les quatre années du conflit à écrire son Journal qui comprend 2600 feuillets manuscrits, grand format ! Un document inégalé qui constitue l'un des témoignages les plus exceptionnels sur un conflit déclenché officiellement pour récupérer l'Alsace et la Lorraine (Moselle), annexées par l'Allemagne à l'issue de la guerre de 1870. Ce témoignage est riche de détails sur la guerre vécue au front et sur la guerre subie à l'arrière, en Alsace, au jour le jour. Ce journal exprime aussi toute la complexité de la situation de l'Alsace : Français de c?ur ("J'ai toujours ressenti Sedan comme une défaite"), Allemand de fait ("J'ai fait mon service militaire en Allemagne") rappelle Charles Spindler, qui a des neveux dans les deux camps ! En effet, comme l'explique l'historien Nicolas Stoskopf, en Alsace, les repères ne sont pas aussi simples qu'à Paris ou à Berlin ! C'est ce à quoi tente aussi de répondre ce Journal. | Informations sur l'auteur : Personnalité hors du commun, Charles Spindler incarne - au tournant de 1900 - la création en Alsace sous de multiples facettes : peintre, photographe, éditeur, écrivain. et plus particulièrement marqueteur. Cette dernière discipline lui valut d'ailleurs une renommée encore vivace aujourd'hui, grâce notamment à ses créations de meubles et ses marqueteries. Son atelier de marqueterie est toujours en activité sous l'égide de son petit-fils, Jean-Charles Spindler, à proximité d'Obernai, dans le hameau de Saint-Léonard.
