Paperback. Condizione: New. This anthology features forty talented writers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and other surrounding states that represent a unique part of American culture. While this region is often misunderstood as one type of place, the Mid-South belongs to a little bit of everywhere: part Southwest, part Midwest, part South-always wild. Our area of the country is both a space of its own and part of a larger, complicated Southern world: the "Mid/South." In this collection, poetry, short stories, and essays offer glimpses into this in-between place as they explore the complexities of our relationships to each other as well as to the natural world. Whether through vivid landscapes, family dramas, or bittersweet love stories, each piece brings more insight into what it means to be from around here.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. As the United States of America approaches its 250th anniversary, many Americans are wondering what binds them together as one people in a deeply polarized age. Is America a nation of ideas--the propositional nation, codified in the principles of limited government, individual rights, and liberal democracy--available to any and all? Or is America a nation of heritage, with a specific culture and set of customs shared by only a few? Some of America's deepest divides, gravest culture wars, and even most shocking news headlines arise from these very questions. In Finding the Founding, Casey Spinks turns to a close reading of the Declaration of Independence to meditate on these same questions. From these meditations arises the hope that they can be answered by paying close attention to the theology of the Declaration: the "Laws of Nature and of Nature's God," the "Creator," the "Supreme Judge of the World," and "Divine providence." It is on these principles, Spinks argues, that America is founded--both its ideals of equality, natural rights, and limited government, and its united civic culture. Perhaps if this truth is realized, then people today may also come to hold these truths of the Declaration as self-evident. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardback. Condizione: New. What is it to be? And what is it to be a Christian? Casey Spinks suggests these two questions belong together when readers attend to Kierkegaard's authorship, and such attention calls for the task of uncovering Kierkegaard's fundamental ontology. This book argues that the heart of that ontology is to be found in the religious discourses of his Second Authorship. Using the devotional discourse The Lily of the Field and the Bird of the Air as his guide, Spinks argues that Kierkegaard offers a distinct Christian sense of being: faith. In particular, in his Second Authorship, he moves from irony to earnestness, and identifies silence, obedience, and joy as ontologically significant categories. This Christian ontology fundamentally opposes the rationalist ontology of G.W.F. Hegel-as well as any other philosophical ontology based on autonomous reason or human subjectivity. As a result, Kierkegaard proves to be a unique Christian figure in the history of Western metaphysics, one with forceful relevance to contemporary questions of first philosophy and first theology.…
