A system of Pedagogy that is solid and down to earth. It is a significant book about guiding a child toward a moral and ethical Life. Some statements unfortunately reflect commonly held discarded social opinions of the time that are contrary to the evolved understanding of modern minds. But the ethics and morality, and child nurturing rule. To my thinking, Edward Porter St. John was ahead of his time in his pronouncements on child care and education, balancing the old question of nature or nurture nicely. He gives great attention to the impressionability of children, and their openness, not just to instruction and guidance, but to new experiences; at the same time he accepts the reality of their psyches as being real and independent but, nonetheless, developing and in need of guidance. That guidance is in the hands of parents and teachers and, also, the teachings of Christian religion. He is not didactic about the religious aspects, but it is a firm and solid part of the picture - taken almost as granted as part of the child's spiritual development, although there is a section on training a child to an interest in missions. There are question and answer sections for each chapter.
