Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume tackles a pressing issue in Roman art history: that many sculptures conventionally used in our scholarship and teaching lack adequate information about their find locations. Questions of context are complex, and any theoretical and methodological reframing of Roman sculpture demands academic transparency. This volume is dedicated to privileging content and context over traditions of style and aesthetics. Through case studies, the chapters illustrate multivariate ways to contextualize ancient objects. The authors encourage Roman art historians to look beyond conventional interpretations; to reclaim from the study of Greek sculpture the Roman originals that are too often relegated to discussions of "copies" and "models"; to consider the multiple, dynamic, and shifting contexts that one sculpture could experience over the centuries of its display; and to recognize that post-antique receptions can also offer insight into interpretations of ancient viewers. The collected topics were originally presented in three conference sessions: "Grounding Roman Sculpture" (Archaeological Institute of America, 2019); "Ancient Sculpture in Context" (College Art Association, 2017); and "Ancient Sculpture in Context II: Reception" (College Art Association, 2019). This volume tackles a pressing issue in Roman art history: that many sculptures conventionally used in our scholarship and teaching lack adequate information about their find locations. Through case studies, the book illustrates ways to contextualize ancient objects. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Apatite, the most abundant phosphate on Earth, is ubiquitous in the lithosphere and in vertebrates of the animal kingdom. Because it forms large colorful crystals, this toothsome mineral is among the most prized species populating mineral collections worldwide. Commonly confused with other minerals, Apatite takes its name from the Greek word άÏ?αÏ?άÏ?, meaning 'to deceive.' This collector's compendium explores in luscious color the science, history, localities and culture of Apatite - the Great Pretender.

Hanson, Jaroslav Hyrsl, Peter Lyckberg, Odulio Jose Marensi de Moura, Milan Novak, Federico Pezzotta, George R. Rossman, William B. Simmons, Gloria A. Staebler, Karen L. Webber Edited by: William B. Simmons, Gloria A. Staebler, David W. Bunk, Alexander U. Falster, Sarah L. Hanson, Karen W. Webber Taking its name from the Latin rubellus, meaning "reddish," rubellite was rare in the ancient world. Its unique properties set it apart from other hard, red gemstones, generically known then as "ruby" or "carbuncle." That distinction was lost during the Dark Ages but revived in the Enlightenment, as science undertook its quest to understand the nature of things. For two and a half centuries, rubellite has had a part of that great unraveling. Today "rubellite" refers to the pink to red variety of tourmaline, a large group of borosilicates. Coveted most for its endless combinations of vivid colors, just a handful of species ?elbaite, liddicoatite, rossmanite ?form rubellite, which is found as large, gemmy, euhedral crystals in pegmatites across the globe. With articles covering history, culture, science, and localities, our expert authors explore the fascinating world of rubellite and its complicated mineral family. Extraordinary imagery illuminates their stories, enticing readers into the paradox of rubellite and its tourmaline brethren.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: New. No Jacket. Robert Weldon, Jeff Scovil (illustratore). 1st Edition. Gossamer ribbons swirling with color and light, agate has a universal appeal. Unconstrained by any internal architecture: agate is a freeform expression of its ancestral fluids, which organize into complex patterns that echo the voids it fills. The effect is natural, balanced asymmetry ? a wabi sabi, Zen aesthetic ? which is perhaps what compels us to hold it as a memento, metaphor, talisman, curiosity, microcosm, or charm. Humans have interacted with agate since time immemorial; and although it minutely details the conditions under which it formed, agate has been the focus of relatively few studies ? its code has yet to be cracked. Agate thus remains an enigmatic gemstone ? a kaleidoscope of complex textures birthed of simple, common silica ? that inspires a wide swath of people from to children to naturopaths to artists, scientists, and collectors. With articles on the history, art, science, and vocabulary of agates, our expert team of authors explore the niche between science and art occupied by this fascinating gem. Extraordinary imagery illuminates the story, enticing readers to get to know the irresistible Quartz Phenomenon ? Agate.
