    Full dark green cloth with titling gilt to upper within decorative device, decorative black-stamped borders, yellow endpapers, all edges gilt. 1f. The present work contains a number of popular carols, including The First Nowell; God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen; and The Holly and the Ivy. Stainer and Bramley first published their collection of carols in the 1860s, which proved highly influential in reviving interest in the area. "Today Stainer is venerated less as a composer than as an educator and a pioneer of English musicology. His edition of Early Bodleian Music, completed shortly before his death, was the first serious effort by an English scholar to explore music before Palestrina and Tallis. Also of value is his edition, with the Rev. H.R. Bramley, of Christmas carols, which is credited by Keyte and Parrott with the first presentation of carols in a 'respectable' form which made them 'fit for inclusion in the services of cathedrals, which had stood out longest against their introduction'."
