Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Who were the first humans to inhabit North America? According to the now familiar story, mammal hunters entered the continent some 12,000 years ago via a land bridge that spanned the Bering Sea. Distinctive stone tools belonging to the Clovis culture established the presence of these early New World people. But are the Clovis tools Asian in origin? Drawing from original archaeological analysis, paleoclimatic research, and genetic studies, noted archaeologists Dennis J. Stanford and Bruce A. Bradley challenge the old narrative and, in the process, counter traditional - and often subjective - approaches to archaeological testing for historical relatedness. The authors apply rigorous scholarship to a hypothesis that places the technological antecedents of Clovis in Europe and posits that the first Americans crossed the Atlantic by boat and arrived earlier than previously thought. Supplying archaeological and oceanographic evidence to support this assertion, the book dismantles the old paradigm while persuasively linking Clovis technology with the culture of the Solutrean people who occupied France and Spain more than 20,000 years ago.…

THE WALAKPA SITE, ALASKA: ITS PLACE IN THE BIRNIRK AND THULE CULTURES (Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology, No. 20.), Dennis J. Stanford, softcover, first edition, illustrated with 29 figures, 119 plates on glossy paper, and ten tables, 1976. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog ears. There is no bookplate nor signature of previous owner. Not a remainder or library book. The blue wraps are in good condition (light fading along some edges, edge wear along spine). 11 ¾ x 9 ¼, 226 pages, 30 ounces. XX [From the text] This archaeological monograph documents the results of a major excavation near Point Barrow, Alaska, conducted in 1968-1969, which uncovered a deeply stratified coastal Eskimo site with over 20 occupation levels. The book's core contributions include: Reconstruction of cultural development from the Birnirk to Thule Eskimo cultures, based on stratigraphy and material culture found at Walakpa, a reevaluation of Birnirk and Thule origins, proposing a new interpretation of how Thule culture emerged directly from Birnirk, and a definition of horizon markers for each Eskimo cultural stage represented at the site. An environmental and subsistence analysis argues that shifts in climate and seal availability pushed Birnirk groups toward increased whale hunting, ultimately driving cultural transformation. The Smithsonian's abstract further emphasizes the monograph's role in documenting newly acquired archaeological data and situating Walakpa within broader Arctic cultural history.
