Nine children and their teacher collaborated on this delightful true story of a pet deer, Skippy a most unusual deer who had a taste for garden roses dash and the courage to fight off a mountain lion. Skippy was a character much talked about in the one-room school at Camp Baldy, in the San Antonio (California) Canyon. Everybody knew something about her, especially the Curry children, who had adopted her when she was a frightened, helpless orphaned fawn. Actually Queenie the Curry dog discovered the fawn and brought her home and from then on Skippy's exploits were a matter of interest to all the children around. To record Skippy's doings, the children in the one-room school and their teacher organized their editorial activities -- they were already publishing a semi-monthly newspaper, The Baldy Breeze -- into book material form.
