Among the co…ntributors are: Angelo M. Codevilla and Frank J. Gaffney, Jr. Arieh Stav was born in 1939 in Rovno, Poland at that time, Ukraine today. In 1951 he moved to Israel with his mother, was educated at Kibbutz Givat Haim, served in the paratroopers and was a member of the Kibbutz until 1963, when he left and moved to Tel Aviv. He studied psychology, philosophy and drama at Tel Aviv University. In 1987 he founded the journal "NATIV" which he edited for 22 years until 2009. In 1997 A.S. established - with a generous grant from Mr. Ted Arison - the Ariel Center for Policy Research which he headed until 2009. During those years A.S. published and edited various books and studies. Books which he has written and edited include: Israel at the Crossroads (1997); Political Strategy in an Era of Chaotic Change (1997); The Israeli Death Wish: A Study in the Jewish Attitude Toward National Sovereignty (1998); Peace: The Arabian Caricature, A Study of Anti-Semitic Imagery (1999); Ballistic Missiles - The Threat and the Response (Hebrew, 1998), (English, 1999), and Israel and a Palestinian State: Zero Sum Game? (2001). This collection of articles and research presented here is the third book-length publication of the Ariel Center for Policy Research (ACPR) since its founding. This collections of articles and research encompasses most of the aspects of defense against ballistic missiles. these range from systems intended to destroy the attacking missile at the boost phase (BPI), such as the Israeli IBIS (Israeli Boost Intercept System) "MOAB" project and the airborne laser (ABL); through systems designed to intercept the missile in mid-trajectory outside the atmosphere (such as the US Army THAAD); to endoatmospheric interceptions, close to the target, such as the Israeli Arrow. One section discussed basic conceptual aspects, while another focuses on the proliferation of missiles and weapons of mass destruction and the MTCR convention interned to prevent such proliferation. The potential threat of ballistic missiles armed with weapons of mass destruction represents a quantum leap in the Mideast arms race. This book poses technical and conceptual questions concerning missile interception as against the doctrine of preemptive strikes.
