The "crop around which agriculture revolves", impoverished the soil, required nonstop back breaking work, and was prodded along by demands for "cigarettes and more cigarette". This twelve month journal begins with eyes alert for rainfall, humidity, temperature, cloudiness, and snow; weather concerns ceased only w/harvest, after which all energies turn to lambing.
