The plates predominantly feature extreme, tightly cropped psychological portraits of Witkacy's bohemian circle in Zakopane, including prominent cultural figures like anthropologist Bronislaw Malinowski and pianist Artur Rubinstein. The book explores his experimental techniques, such as the famous multiple-exposure mirror portraits and staged, performative self-portraits where the artist adopts bizarre facial expressions and theatrical personas. These performative gestures are analysed as visual extensions of his philosophical theories regarding the "Mystery of Existence" and his existential dread of metaphysical nothingness. By presenting these rare gelatin silver prints, the book establishes the Polish polymath as a precursor to modern conceptual, psychological, and staged photography.
