Soft cover. Condizione: New. 274 pages. Academic volume in Latin language, with Italian texts extracted from documents from archives of the 19th century. The first of the series "Inscriptiones Sanctae Sedis", this index in the '90s began the systematic publication of the immense epigraphic heritage of the Papal State. The study takes in consideration the ancient inscriptions placed on the walls of the Galleria Lapidaria, about 3500 Christians and pagan texts, in Latin and Greek. After the "restoration" and the classification in the early '800 by the eminent scholar Luigi Gaetano Marini, the epigraphs went to form one of the more substantial and important collections conserved in the Vatican. This exhaustive instrument of study consists of a concise history of the collection and three indexes, which offer three methods of consultation: the topographic index catalogs the epitaphs by dividing them by themes, following the placement of marbles along the Gallery; the inventory index lists the inscriptions according to the inventory number; finally, the bibliographic index, organized by references of the main epigraphic corpora. Particularly exquisite is the illustrative apparatus, with 127 black and white photographs of the inscribed walls in which the headstones are embedded.…

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 380 pages : illustrations ; 35 cm. Folded map "Monumenti paleocristiani di Roma e suburbio (III-VI secolo)" in pocket. 'A precious Italian language catalogue of the exhibition dedicated to the Christian epigraphy, held in 1998 at the Vatican Museums. The catalogue offers a wide panorama not only of the imposing Christian section of the Epigraphic Collection of the Vatican Museums, but also of some relics preserved in the Sacred Museum of the Vatican Apostolic Library and in the collection of Teutonic Cemetery. A series of contributions reconstructs the history of the epigraphic texts preserved in the Vatican Museums, giving particular prominence to their origin, museographic vicissitudes and the related archive documents. Hub of the volume is the profound examination of the late-ancient inscriptions of Rome, especially those of a Christian origin, with a particular interest for the linguistic, historical and archaeological aspects. Following, critical charts meticulously analyse the exhibited epigraphic texts. The thematic sections, chronologically ordered, concern, among others, the inscriptions reporting names of sites and monuments of Rome, those of lapidary style, the inscription relating to the roman governing class or the hierarchy of the church, as well as those dedicated to saints and martyrs. A photographic apparatus, collecting impressive black and white pictures of the exhibits, closes the volume. A map of the early-Christian monuments of Rome and their surroundings between the 3rd and 4th century is also attached.'.…
