The first of the series "Inscriptiones Sanctae Sedis", this index in the '90s began the systematic publication of the immense epigraphic heritage of the Papal State. The study takes in consideration the ancient inscriptions placed on the walls of the Galleria Lapidaria, about 3500 Christians and pagan texts, in Latin and Greek. After the "restoration" and the classification in the early '800 by the eminent scholar Luigi Gaetano Marini, the epigraphs went to form one of the more substantial and important collections conserved in the Vatican. This exhaustive instrument of study consists of a concise history of the collection and three indexes, which offer three methods of consultation: the topographic index catalogs the epitaphs by dividing them by themes, following the placement of marbles along the Gallery; the inventory index lists the inscriptions according to the inventory number; finally, the bibliographic index, organized by references of the main epigraphic corpora. Particularly exquisite is the illustrative apparatus, with 127 black and white photographs of the inscribed walls in which the headstones are embedded.

A series of contributions reconstructs the history of the epigraphic texts preserved in the Vatican Museums, giving particular prominence to their origin, museographic vicissitudes and the related archive documents.
