Thus, a lesion on the brain can have long-term consequences for the concerned person, such as paralyses, decreased reflexes, altered sensory perception, memory deficits, and/or speech and comprehension impairments. The latter may include aphasia (i.e. affection of Broca's or Wernicke's area causing an inability to produce or comprehend language), apraxia (impairment of voluntary movements), or foreign accent syndrome (also known as altered-accent syndrome).The foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is a disorder that is still not completely researched, since, according to Katz et al. (2008: 537), its 'symptomotology and underlying bases are poorly understood.' Nevertheless, there are some cases that have been described and examined. This essay deals with the main speech characteristics of FAS and the relative extent to which segmental and prosodic features are affected in this disorder. Therefore, the syndrome will be defined and described first. In the succeeding section, the segmental and prosodic features of FAS are taken into consideration. The last part contains the classification of FAS with respect to other speech and language disorders, such as apraxia, aphasia, and dysarthria, whether it is a mere sub-type of these disorders or if it should be treated separately.

In French the ultimate syllable is the most prominent each time. The penultimate syllable is constantly stressed in Polish. As can be seen, there are strict general rules with respect to a word's stress. In English, however, the stressing of a lexeme appears to be arbitrary rather than following certain stress rules. The spelling does not indicate a word's pronunciation, let alone its stress. Moreover, the stress may even differ within the same word. Thus, thir'teen can be stressed on the last syllable, but in an environment of another word, e.g. 'thirteen 'pints, it can also be pronounced with a prominent first syllable in order to keep eurhythmy. Nevertheless, it looks like native speakers have a perceptual ability to say how many syllables a word has and to tell which syllable receives the most stress. Therefore, Carr (1999) considers three trisyllabic non-English words: Gigondas, Zaventem and tavola. The author points out that English speakers always tend to stress the penultimate syllable mispronouncing each of theses words. Why do speakers with English as their mother tongue react in this way Is this a proof of generalisation and existing stress patterns In this essay it is discussed whether the primary stress of singular words has to be learned, e.g. like their spelling or the sequence of their phonemes, or if the stressing of a lexeme follows internalized rules (due to a lack of space, secondary stress shall be excluded here). The technical methods of neurophysiology have been in extensive progress since the 1950s. These methods enable researchers to examine the functions of brain activities, such as language processes. This neurophysiological progress also supports the research of speech and language disorders, such as aphasia and agrammatism, dyslexia, and thought disordered speech (as in schizophrenia). As a consequence, causes of the disorders and possible therapies (i.e., if they are successful or not) are studied.The presented essay deals with the topic, how neurophysiological and neuroimaging techniques have advanced our knowledge and understanding of speech and language disorders, especially of lexical semantic disorders (aphasia including agrammatism), as well as thought disordered speech (schizophrenia) and dyslexia. In order to discuss this issue, the theoretical background of these disorders will be considered to discuss the functions of the respective techniques in each case. The techniques are briefly described in advance to provide the basis for the discussion.

It contradicts many of SPE's main theses and thoughts and became one of the leading phonological theories in the 1980s.This essay provides a sketch of LP and its constraints and conventions. This model is illustrated by using some examples of the various components of this approach. Furthermore, the differences between LP and Postlexical Phonology are pointed out. After this section, the controversies of this theory are discussed.

Not only was the English grammar, pronunciation or vocabulary being altered over the centuries but also the semantics of the lexemes. The changes in the field of semantics might have had several reasons. According to Antoine Meillet , a French linguist, there are basically three major causes of semantic change: changes of the socio-cultural circumstances, the linguistic context in which a word is used, or changes of the respective concept itself or of the point of view from which the concept is seen. The third and most significant factor that has a considerable impact on the semantics of words is the influence of foreign languages and, to be more precise, the influence of borrowings. This paper deals with semantic changes due to Latin influences on the English language in the Early Modern English period. The aim of the following analysis is to determine potential patterns of meaning alterations of English lexemes that were caused by the influx of Latin-derived equivalents between the fifteenth and the eighteenth centuries. In the subsequent sections the Early Modern English period is portrayed including its historical and social-cultural backgrounds. Afterwards, the roles of Latin and English in that time will be illustrated, also considering the integration of Latin loanwords into English. In order to discuss meaning changes due to Latin influences, we will then take a closer look at language modifications in general, lexical change and the various types of semantic change by which English words might have been affected. The sections following these illustrations are going to contain the semantic analysis of exemplary synonymous pairs, each consisting of an English element and its Latin-derived equivalent, with the help of the Oxford English Dictionary Online. Pairs belonging to the subject of human anatomy are to be considered primarily, but also words of other lexical fields, such as medicine, botany and architecture, in order to determine common patterns of semantic change.

Worin besteht das Endziel Was ist der wahre Frieden Wo findet sich das höchste Gut Wie kann es erlangt werden All diesen Fragen widmeten sich bereits in der Antike und Spätantike Philosophen und Theologen und kamen dabei zu meist höchst unterschiedlichen Argumenten und Antworten.Die Stoiker knüpften den finis boni an die Tugend und tugendhaftes Leben. Dabei sei die menschliche Seele bereits im Diesseits frei von allen Übeln und Affekten. So könne die vollkommene Glückseligkeit erlangt werden. Die Tugend gilt also als 'höchste Leistung der menschlichen Seele,' so Krieger. Aristoteles und Platon hingegen verbanden das höchste Gut mit dem vollkommen schönen, glückseligen Leben. Dabei wird die Wirkung der Tugend sowie der naturgemäßen Güter herangezogen. Epikur sah das höchste Gut in der voluptas - der Lust als Schmerlosigkeit. Die geistige Lust sei dabei wichtiger als die Körperliche. Auch Cicero hat sich in seinem Werk De finibus bonorum et malorum, wie der Titel bereits sagt, diesem Thema angenommen und diskutiert dabei die Ansichten Aristoteles, Epikurs und der Stoiker.Der Theologe und Kirchenvater Augustinus, einstiger Bischof von Hippo, hat sich - nach dem Fall Roms im Jahre 410 - in seinem Werk De civitate Dei der Frage nach dem summum bonum hingegeben. Vor allem im neunzehnen Buch diskutiert er die philosophischen Meinungen zu diesem Thema, die oben bereits kurz vorgestellt wurden, und begründet darauf die christliche Ansicht, dass das höchste Gut nicht, wie die Philosophen behaupten, in diesem Leben zu finden sei, sondern erst im Jenseits, dem ewigen Leben, erlangt werden könne.Diese Arbeit soll sich mit der Argumentation des Augustinus zum höchsten Gut und den christlichen Ansichten - vor allem wie diese sich von den Ansätzen der Philosophen unterscheiden - auseinandersetzen. Dabei, so Manfred Fuhrmann in seinem Buch 'Die Dichtkunst der Antike', gehe Horaz gegen 'Plattheit, Mode und Dilletantismus' vor, aber nicht - wie vor Horaz Aristoteles - '[.] gegen eine fremde theoretische Position von grundsätzlicher Bedeutung.' Das Werk sei, so Fuhrmann weiter, immerhin nahe an einer dichtungstheoretischen Abhandlung, die später zur Zeit Quintilians große Anerkennung fand. Die Ars poetica sei demnach weniger ein Kompendium, denn das Kunstwerk an sich stehe im Vordergrund, also die poetische Form. Das Werk kann nach Manfred Fuhrmann grob in zwei Hauptteile gegliedert werden. Somit ergibt sich der erste Teil von Anfang bis einschließlich Vers 294, der vor allem werkästhetische Materien abhandelt. In French the ultimate syllable is the most prominent each time. The penultimate syllable is constantly stressed in Polish. As can be seen, there are strict general rules with respect to a word's stress. In English, however, the stressing of a lexeme appears to be arbitrary rather than following certain stress rules. The spelling does not indicate a word's pronunciation, let alone its stress. Moreover, the stress may even differ within the same word. Thus, thir'teen can be stressed on the last syllable, but in an environment of another word, e.g. 'thirteen 'pints, it can also be pronounced with a prominent first syllable in order to keep eurhythmy. Nevertheless, it looks like native speakers have a perceptual ability to say how many syllables a word has and to tell which syllable receives the most stress. Therefore, Carr (1999) considers three trisyllabic non-English words: Gigondas, Zaventem and tavola. The author points out that English speakers always tend to stress the penultimate syllable mispronouncing each of theses words. Why do speakers with English as their mother tongue react in this way Is this a proof of generalisation and existing stress patterns In this essay it is discussed whether the primary stress of singular words has to be learned, e.g. like their spelling or the sequence of their phonemes, or if the stressing of a lexeme follows internalized rules (due to a lack of space, secondary stress shall be excluded here).
