Die elektronischen Geräte aber können ausfallen, sodass man notfalls auf konventionelle Weise navigieren muss.Besondere Aktualität gewinnt die astronomische Navigation angesichts der aktuellen Ereignisse, denn die USA als Betreiber des Global Positioning Systems könnten aus Gründen der national security Genauigkeit und Verfügbarkeit von GPS wieder einschränken.Im ersten Teil der Neubearbeitung des Buches"Astronomische Navigation"wird der unverzichtbare Sextant ausführlich behandelt, sein Aufbau, vor allem aber seine Handhabung.Im zweiten Teil beschreibt Werner Kumm mit einem Minimum an Theorie, wie auch der Einsteiger auf einfache Weise eine astronomische Ortsbestimmung durchführen kann.
