A prodigy, she quickly exhibited literary and artistic talents; at the age of ten she addressed a convention on Women's Rights on the suffering of Indian women. After a brief, failed marriage, she became destitute, tried making a living selling "Indian Liniment," then found she could make more selling her own oil paintings. Wa Wa Chaw never forgot her Native American heritage. She often suffered humiliation as a "City Indian"; she was laughed at, insulted, arrested. From the first she took up the struggle for the human rights of Indians; her support of every Indian cause never lessened until the day of her death.
