Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Comfort is a prominent and highly loaded concept, as popular discourses on cosy environments, safe spaces, but also the importance of getting out of your comfort zone attest. This volume is the first to investigate comfort as a cultural narrative and emotional touchstone in contemporary culture. Taken together, the contributions to the volume offer an overview of different approaches to and conceptualisations of comfort in linguistics, in literary, media, and cultural studies, and art history. They showcase how comfort serves as a valuable lens to analyse contemporary artworks and developments, e.g. live theatre broadcasting or political interventions in the US-American media sphere. This book is the first to provide a broader investigation of comfort as a cultural narrative and emotional touchstone in contemporary culture. It draws upon the work of Andreas Reckwitz and connects his sociological theories with other approaches to subjectivity. This approach is innovative since to this date no extended study exists that discusses subject cultures and Reckwitz's concepts from a literary studies perspective. The essays concentrate on points of transition between subject cultures and demonstrate that the English novel functions as a key tool in articulating as well as negotiating concepts of modern subjectivity." -- Contents: Introduction: Literature and Subject Cultures; -- I. By drawing on different theories of realism, the authors explore how the term may be used as a helpful concept in order to analyse and evaluate current trends in cultural production and, in turn, how cultural production changes our understanding of what counts as 'realism'. The contributions deal with realism in narrative fiction, drama and audiovisual media (film, television news) within the context of national traditions: examples drawn on in the case studies range from Africa, Britain, Germany, Iceland, Russia, Turkey to the United States. While the authors take their cues from media-specific 'realisms', focusing especially on narrative fiction, the volume also highlights continuities and intersections between notions of realism in different genres and media. With its original essays, this collection invigorates the transdisciplinary engagement with forms and socio-political functions of realism in contemporary culture.
