L'ouvrage comporte, avec l'accord de Beyle, quelques pages de ce dernier. Il s'agit du fragment concernant les "Brigands en Italie" (p. 228-259), que Colomb introduit comment étant de "l'un de [ses] nouveaux amis". Le texte était prévu pour faire partie des suppléments à une réédition des Promenades dans Rome, qui ne sera pas publiée. Stendhal y étrille la mauvaise administration des papes et des "ministres acoquinés au brigandage" (Spengler), qu'il oppose à celle des Français pendant la période napoléonienne, qui "par des mesures saines et vigoureuses, continrent ces bandes d'assassins, et [.] firent jouir les Romains et les autres peuples d'Italie, d'une sécurité inconnue depuis plusieurs siècles" (p. 257). Cette thématique du brigandage, en tant que conséquence des abus et de la tyrannie, reviendra sous la plume de Stendhal dans L'Abbesse de Castro (1839). Les pages 458-465 renferment un "Catalogue des principaux ouvrages sur l'Italie, écrits ou traduits en français". Étiquette ex-libris "R.N." sur le contreplat. Bel exemplaire. Rousseurs claires.
