Zwölf anerkannte Forscherinnen und Forscher betten Albrecht den Bären in die politisch-strukturellen Kontexte seiner Zeit ein, zeigen auf, wie er seinen Weg durch das von Umbrüchen gekennzeichnete 12. Jahrhundert nahm und welchen Herausforderungen um Herrschaft und Missionierung er in Gestalt von Gegenspielern und Konflikten begegnete. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt gilt der Wirkungsgeschichte Albrechts des Bären, vor deren Hintergrund zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der teilweise bis in die Gegenwart bestehenden Glorifizierung und damit einhergehenden Instrumentalisierung der Person Albrechts angeregt werden soll. Dabei wird insbesondere aufgezeigt, wie der Nationalsozialismus Albrecht als Wegbereiter einer deutschen Ostpolitik umdeutete, missbrauchte und sich dieses Geschichtsbild auf die eigens im Schloss Ballenstedt errichtete Gruft auswirkte.
