Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Freistadt Pesth. Leipzig - Pesth, 1830. Wigand's. (Printed: Landerer.) [8] 180 p. First edition in German. Later hardcover paper binding, gilt label on spine. An extremely rare, only German edition of István Széchenyi's famous work on horses, published two years after the first edition in Hungarian. The book is Széchenyi's first major work, in which he advocates raising the standard of Hungarian horse breeding and proposes the organisation of horse races. - Count István Széchenyi de Sárvár-Felsövidék, Stephen Széchenyi (1791 1860) was a Hungarian politician, political theorist, and writer. Widely considered one of the greatest statesmen in his nation's history, within Hungary he is still known to many as "the Greatest Hungarian". The Széchenyis were an old and influential noble family of Hungary. Traditionally loyal to the House of Habsburg, they were linked with noble families, such as the Liechtenstein, the House of Esterházy and the House of Lobkowicz. István Széchenyi's father was an enlightened aristocrat who founded the Hungarian National Museum and the Hungarian National Library. Széchenyi realised how far Hungary lagged behind in terms of economic, institutional and social development. He was fascinated by the technological novelties he saw and took detailed notes and drew rough sketches in his journal to bring them home to Hungary. He aimed to bridge the gap by establishing public institutions, introducing reforms, embellishing the cityscape of Pest and introducing Hungarians to the illustrious world of horse racing. His plan was to lure share companies and the wealthy élite into Budapest and boost the city s economic and intellectual development. In England, he learned the ways of horse breeding and racing in the company of fellow Hungarian statesman, Miklós Wesselényi. His greatest achievement was the construction of a permanent crossing between Pest and Buda, the magnificent Széchenyi Chain Bridge, which he never crossed over in his entire life. Zweite, berichtigte, verbesserte und vermehrte Ausgabe. 8°. - Menger Bibliothek Tokio 373. Gutes Exemplar.…
