Hardback. Condizione: Good. This remarkable new book is for everyone interested in the origin and evolution of the universe. It relates the history of chemicals, from the earliest generation of the light elements in the Big Bang, to their transformation into heavier atoms and their subsequent molecular evolution into myriad forms, including life on Earth. Spanning both organic and inorganic chemical combinations, the survey thus covers billions of years and involves evidence coming from the analysis of long-extinct as well as ongoing processes. The techniques used in this fascinating study are also described. They include the analysis of many sources: isotopes from ancient nuclear reactions and still-active radionuclides; molecules from space--frozen in meteorites or continuously generated in vast interstellar clouds; and the detritus of volcanic and geochemical activity. This is also the story of the origin of life, which can be biochemically detected through the modern descendants of early microbial life-forms and from laboratory experiments in prebiotic chemistry. The author also describes the history of ideas in the study of chemistry and the development of modern theories on chemical evolution. This is a highly readable account of central issues and ideas in modern science that will be read with absorbing interest by a wide range of students, researchers, and general readers.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. Originally published under the title Main Currents of Scientific Thought, Stephen F. Mason's comprehensive history traces the development of the natural sciences from ancient Babylonian astronomy through Greek, Islamic, medieval, Renaissance, and modern scientific traditions. The book gives particular attention to the relationship between scientific discovery and the philosophical, theological, social, and technological forces that shaped it. Mason surveys the history of astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and related disciplines while examining the changing methods and institutions of scientific inquiry. First issued in this revised form by Collier Books in 1962, the work remains a substantial one-volume introduction to the history of science. Condition: Fair condition. Covers show heavy general wear, including rubbing, soiling, scratches, numerous creases, edge wear, and bumped and curled corners. The spine is creased and discolored, with cracking to the laminate and small chips and tears at the ends. Page edges and interior paper are substantially age-toned. An earlier owner's ink name and address appear on the preliminary praise page. The binding remains usable, and the text is legible throughout the portions examined. No extensive writing or highlighting was observed. Please review photographs closely for the best representation of condition. This is the fourth printing, dated 1967, of the first Collier Books edition and is not a first edition. Its interest is primarily as a substantial and inexpensive reading copy for students and readers of the history and philosophy of science. The book will be carefully wrapped and securely packed for shipment. Domestic shipping is available by USPS Media Mail unless another service is requested. Returns are accepted in accordance with AbeBooks policies. SCI 2b.…

"This book takes chemistry as the central science of all materials - inorganic and organic - at the molecular level, and brings together both aspects in a clear account of the development of ideas of chemical evolution. This fascinating survey covers the generation of the light chemical elements in the Big Bang, their transformation into heavier elements in the stars, the origin of the solar system, and the molecular evolution of minerals and organisms on the earth." 317 pages.
