En 1904, un « inspecteur général de l'éducation » de Lawton (Oklahoma) rencontre un vieil Indien, prisonnier de guerre et déporté, loin de son Arizona natal, à Fort Sill où il terminait ses jours en cultivant des pastèques : il s'agissait du célèbre chef apache Géronimo qui avait tenu en respect victorieusement, des années durant, les meilleures troupes et les plus glorieux généraux des États-Unis. Déjà vendu à plus de 50 000 exemplaires, ce témoignage du célèbre chef apache constitue un document irremplaçable sur le génocide des Indiens d'Amérique. « De tous les grands chefs de la résistance indienne à la conquête européenne, l'Apache Chiricahua Go Khla Yeh, surnommé par ses adversaires mexicains Géronimo, est sans doute le plus célèbre et il faut saluer la parution en français dans une bonne traduction et une édition particulièrement soignée de ses mémoires.
