Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. What is 'evil'? How is it categorized, understood and used? Surveying examples from cinema, music and politics, Notes on Evil provides observations on the mechanisms by which societies construct enemies in a collective bid to expel their 'problems'. But does the label of evil help to rid us of social ills? Or does it just lead to superficial purges that distract us from deeper forms of inequity?Artist and writer Steven Warwick offers a series of notes on the overlapping social architectures that frame our current discourse on good and evil, seeking to chart a path beyond our collective impasse. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Hardcover and dust jacket. Good binding and cover. Light wear. Clean, unmarked pages. xxiv, 264 pages ; 24 cm. "No music scholar has made as profound an impact on contemporary thought as Susan McClary, a central figure in what has been termed the 'new musicology'. In this volume seventeen distinguished scholars pay tribute to her work, with essays addressing three approaches to music that have characterized her own writings: reassessing music's role in identity formation, particularly regarding gender, sexuality, and race; exploring music's capacity to define and regulate perceptions and experiences of time; and advancing new modes of analysis more appropriate to those aspects and modes of musicking ignored by traditional methods. The collection represents the generational arrival of the 'new' musicology into full maturity, dividing fairly evenly between pre-eminent scholars of music and a group of younger scholars who have already made their mark in significant ways. But the collection is also, and fundamentally, interdisciplinary in nature, in active conversation with such fields as history, anthropology, philosophy, aesthetics, media studies, film music studies, dramatic criticism, women's studies, and cultural studies.".

--- The practice of Antwerp-based artist Dennis Tyfus (b. 1979) encompasses a wide range of artistic media, including drawings, sculptures, installations, videos, magazines, books, music, vinyl records, tattoos, his own radio show, concerts and performances. In his oeuvre, everything flows into everything else, without a fixed definition, beginning or end. In doing so, he draws heavily on the work of artists such as Dieter Roth, Mike Kelley, Jim Shaw and Wim T. Schippers. By combining elements from his personal psyche with various aspects of high and low culture and approaching them on an equal footing, Tyfus creates a universe in which the personal, the everyday and the uncanny come together. This book brings together a wide selection from his oeuvre. 1800 g.
