Paperback. Condizione: New. In The Member of the Wedding, a 1946 novel by the American author Carson McCullers, the twelve-year-old protagonist Frankie Addams sighs: 'They were the two prettiest people I ever saw. Yet it was like I couldn't see all of them I wanted to see. My brains couldn't gather together quick enough and take it all in. And then they were gone. You see what I mean?' That Stief DeSmet 'understands' what Frankie means like no other, how could it be otherwise? What he invariably presents in his work, and again in Paradise, Prototypes and Other Deconstructions, is the fragmentary representation of something that is too agile and too fleeting in its totality - far too agile and fleeting - to be fully grasped. Paradoxically enough, that 'something' cannot be equated to what we often call the 'unreal' beauty of supremely attractive people, or to colourful skies filled with billowing clouds, or even with artistic masterpieces. Nor is it related, in a non-aesthetic sense, to the type of incident that is often characterised as 'too good to be true'. That 'something' is unambiguously real - the absolute reality, namely, of an animal. More specifically: a creature that is wild and non-domesticated. In DeSmet's work, this reality appears to be inherently flawed, or rather, it is too fleeting and agile to be seen and experienced, since we are such imperfect, torn and flawed beings. Our brains don't work fast enough, that is true, and furthermore, a new moment dawns with every blink of the eye, each one of which is diametrically opposed to its predecessor. When reality chooses, above all else, to reveal itself in the form of an animal, it perpetually eludes us - 'you see what I mean?' - and to such an extent that it no longer seems to exist. It is this fact that Stief DeSmet seeks to impress upon us with his work. (extract from the text of Christophe Vekeman)In collaboration with Be-Part Waregem.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Hunting & Collecting offers an in-depth look into the poetic and conceptual world of Belgian artist Stief DeSmet, whose work explores the complex relationship between nature, culture, and human intervention. In his practice, DeSmet moves as a collector seamlessly between painting, sculpture, performance, and installation, creating visual narratives that oscillate between irony, nostalgia, and critical reflection. Through a series of striking works and thoughtful essays, Hunting & Collecting examines the artist's ongoing dialogue with the natural world - not as an untouched ideal, but as a space shaped and reshaped by human desire and imagination. DeSmet's art embodies the tension between the longing for a pure, utopian nature and the realities of contemporary, consumption-driven life. Richly illustrated and conceptually layered, this monograph offers a comprehensive insight into DeSmet's oeuvre, tracing his evolution from the hunter and urban observer to rural storyteller. With contributions by curators and art critics, Hunting & Collecting captures an artist whose work stands as both a critique and a celebration of humankind's enduring fascination with nature. Thoreau's Walden is continuous inspiration for the artist. He even built a replica of Thoreau's cabin in his artistic garden. AUTHOR: Stief DeSmet (b. 1973, Belgium) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the ambiguous relationship between nature and culture. Through painting, sculpture, installation, and performance, he examines humanity's attempts to control, idealise, and coexist with the natural world. His practice is marked by irony, introspection, and a deep awareness of ecological and cultural tension. He defines himself as a hunter and collector who composes new artefacts by working in relation to his micro-environment. After living in Ghent and Los Angeles, DeSmet now works from his studio in Bachte-Maria-Leerne, Belgium, and a second base in Burgundy, France. His works are held in public and private collections across Europe and the United States and have been exhibited at S.M.A.K., mudel, Be-Part, DE GARAGE, Espace Pierre Cardin Paris, and Tianjin Museum (China). SELLING POINTS: . Explores the interplay between nature and culture through painting, sculpture, and installation . Includes critical essays and extensive visual documentation of key works and exhibitions . Appeals to readers interested in conceptual art, environmental themes, and cultural critique 199 colour, 29 b/w illustrations A visually rich monograph exploring Stief DeSmets poetic tension between nature, culture, and the human imagination. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
